Job summary

Washington & Jefferson College seeks a Public Safety Specialist to join the Department of Campus & Public Safety in a hybrid role handling both communications/dispatch and field security tasks. You will serve as the primary contact for calls and radio traffic while patrolling campus to deter incidents and support officers.

Responsibilities include monitoring CCTV and alarms, coordinating emergency responses, unlocking buildings for events, and assisting with non-enforcement duties.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, communications, or related field preferred.
• Prior experience in campus safety, security, or emergency communications preferred.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and multi-tasking skills.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the initial point of contact for telephone calls, radio transmissions, and in-person inquiries to the Department of Campus & Public Safety.
• Receive, assess, and prioritize emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatch personnel and coordinate response efforts accordingly.
• Monitor and operate campus security systems including CCTV, fire alarms, intrusion alarms, and access control platforms.
• Document all calls for service, incidents, and system activity accurately and thoroughly.
• Maintain clear, professional communication in high-pressure and emergency situations.
