Job summary

The University of Michigan is establishing a flagship institutional hub in Washington, DC, located at 1700 M St NW. As the Director of Operations, you will serve as the sole on-site operational lead, responsible for day-to-day facility management, stakeholder engagement, and delivering a seamless experience for faculty, students, alumni, and university leadership.

Qualifications

• 7 years of progressively responsible operations experience in facilities, events, or a related field.
• 5 years of experience hiring or supervising staff.
• Experience in a startup-like environment, building routines and service networks from scratch.
• Experience supporting complex meeting, classroom, or high-profile event logistics and digital tools for room reservations and access control.

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day operations for a high-visibility university facility.
• Coordinate facility maintenance, custodial services, supplies, room configurations, vendor access, and building operations.
• Serve as the primary on-site contact for users, visitors, faculty, speakers, vendors, and campus partners.
• Support meetings, classes, and events through room setup, AV checks, signage, catering coordination, vendor logistics, troubleshooting, and post-event reset.
• Provide front-line IT/AV support for Wi‑Fi, displays, video walls, digital signage, conferencing tech, and room reservations; escalate as needed.
• Develop on-site staffing and coverage plans, including supplemental staff for evenings/weekends.
• Manage local purchasing, invoicing, budget tracking, vendor billing, and operational spending.
• Enforce space-use policies and escalate safety or policy issues as needed.
• Build strong relationships with internal/external stakeholders, including leadership and campus units.
• Track space usage, service requests, and feedback to drive improvements and long-term planning.
• Support launch activities, move-in logistics, vendor onboarding, and site operations strategy.
