Job summary

Virginia Tech is seeking a Lock Shop Maintenance Specialist to support the Access Department’s daily operations in Blacksburg. You will help schedule tasks, oversee security databases, and ensure all doors and hardware function correctly across Student Affairs facilities.

The role involves installing hardware in 53+ residence halls and numerous spaces, maintaining lock-change records, and coordinating with vendors. Strong confidentiality and locksmith training are essential.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma is required.
• Experience with maintaining inventory and record keeping.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of highly sensitive records and materials.
• Ability to take online courses independently and on schedule for continuing training.
• Ability to complete a locksmith training program and obtain certification.

Responsibilities

• Assist with daily operations of the Access Department, including scheduling and task assignments.
• Oversee security databases for the department.
• Prepare Keys Out Reports daily.
• Ensure operation of all doors and door hardware in Student Affairs facilities.
• Install door hardware and cores across numerous buildings (approx. 250+ changes annually).
• Maintain an inventory system of locks and lock changes.
• Assist with daily record-keeping and key-control audits.
• Coordinate with contractors and vendors; manage access cards and deactivation/audit cycles.
• Input requests for brass keys and electronic key box access.
• Support Sign Shop Specialist with signage design for Student Affairs buildings.
• Maintain knowledge of department and university key/security policies.
