Job summary

Virginia Tech is hiring a Lock Shop Maintenance Specialist to support the Lock Shop Manager in daily Access Department operations. You will oversee security databases, generate daily Keys Out Reports, and ensure proper operation of all doors and hardware across Student Affairs facilities.

The role involves installing hardware across 53+ residence halls and offices, maintaining lock inventory, and auditing key control each semester.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Experience with inventory control and record keeping.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive records and materials.
• Willingness to complete online training and obtain Locksmith certification.

• Install door hardware and cores across residence halls and facilities (~250+ lock changes per year).
• Maintain inventory system for locks and changes to assure security.
• Assist with record-keeping and semester key control audits.
• Coordinate with contractors and vendors to issue and audit temporary electronic access cards.
• Process requests for brass keys and electronic key box access.
• Collaborate with Sign Shop Specialist on signage for Student Affairs buildings.
• Maintain knowledge of key security policies and procedures.

• Ensure operation of all doors and door hardware including fire exit doors, exterior doors, and interior doors in all Student Affairs facilities.
• Installation of door hardware and cores in over 53 residence halls, dining centers, SECL spaces, and office facilities representing approximately 250+ lock changes a year.
• Assists with maintaining an inventory system of locks and lock changes in accordance with established procedures to assure security.
• Assists Lock Shop Manager with daily record-keeping and each semester key control audits.
• Works closely with outside contractors and vendors and issues temporary electronic access cards, ensuring that the cards are returned or deactivated, and regularly audits access cards.
• Receives and inputs requests for brass keys and electronic key box access.
• Works closely with Sign Shop Specialist and assists with the design and creation of university-approved signage for Student Affairs buildings.
• Maintains knowledge of departmental and university key and security policies.

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma
• Experience with maintaining inventory and record keeping.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and security of highly sensitive records and materials.
• Ability to take classes online and complete specified course work, independently and on schedule as needed for continuing training.
• Ability to successfully complete a training program and receive certification as a Locksmith.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous locksmith experience with Best IC core experience.
• Working knowledge of maintenance methods; maintenance materials, tools and procedures; maintenance safety practices.
• Demonstrated experience and good mechanical skills in areas such as carpentry, low voltage electricity, and general maintenance.
• Experience with sign engraving/design.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
• Working knowledge of computers.
• Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Additional Information

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30 am - 3:30 pm, may vary to meet customer needs.

The successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check as well as a driving check with a safe driving record.
