Job summary

University of California, Santa Cruz is seeking a Lighting Technician to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair interior and exterior lighting across the campus. The role covers 120/208 and 277/480 V circuits and controllers, with hands-on maintenance and safety adherence.

The position involves collaboration with campus electricians, supervision of student staff, and handling preventive maintenance programs. A valid CA lighting tech certification is preferred along with flexibility for after-hours

Qualifications

  • Experience in preventative maintenance and repair of interior and exterior lighting systems including fluorescent, incandescent, and LED.
  • Experience in preventative maintenance and repair of lighting controls and lighting time clocks.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical theory (AC/DC, Ohms law, transformers, relays).
  • Experience using basic electrical testing equipment such as multimeters.
  • Ability to work from a schedule for organized preventative maintenance programs and work orders.
  • Record keeping and attention to detail to document repairs, locations, and stock requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and follow instructions and perform basic math.

Responsibilities

  • Replace lamps, ballasts, LEDs, and drivers.
  • Adjust lighting controllers and time clocks.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on interior and exterior lighting and routes.
  • Respond to light-out complaints and troubleshoot issues.
  • Diagnose sources of problems and acquire parts for repairs.
  • Maintain cleanliness of electrical rooms and prep/paint equipment as directed.
  • Assist campus electricians in installing circuits and cleaning high-voltage gear.
  • Supervise student staff and advise on safety procedures.
  • Perform safety inspections and trainings; follow safety procedures.
  • Maintain daily timesheets and manage inventory needs.
