Job summary

San José State University is seeking a Groundsworker to maintain campus landscapes, assist with irrigation systems, and support recycling operations. You will work under the Grounds, Landscape & Recycling Manager and lead student workers and volunteers as assigned.

Responsibilities include mowing, pruning, fertilizing, weed control, and equipment operation, with after-hours on-call as required. A valid CA driver's license and OSHA-physicals are required.

Qualifications

• One year of grounds maintenance or related manual labor experience.
• Must participate in OSHA-required physicals.
• Requires a valid California Driver's License for operation of vehicle/equipment.
• Defensive Driver Training completion is required.
• Out-of-state candidates must obtain a California driver's license within 10 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Maintain campus grounds and landscaped areas including lawns, trees, shrubs, hedges, flowers, and groundcover.
• Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, vehicles, and equipment; perform minor maintenance and report repairs.
• Collect and dispose of trash and recyclables; keep grounds and tools clean; respond to urgent grounds needs.
• Assist with irrigation system inspection, adjustment and minor repairs for efficient water use.
• Support athletic fields preparation and maintenance for safe playability.
• Provide lead work direction to unskilled assistants and student workers.
• Document work using CMMS, log sheets, and timekeeping systems.
• Participate in after-hours emergency response, overtime, meetings, and safety training.
