Job summary

San Jose State University is seeking an Operating Engineer to support its heating, cooling, and utility infrastructure across a multi-site campus. You will monitor and optimize building automation, perform preventive maintenance, respond to emergencies, and ensure safe operation of central plant systems.

The role requires hands-on work with boilers, chillers, cogeneration, and related equipment, plus strong knowledge of energy management and safety procedures.

Qualifications

Experience operating boilers and chillers.
Certificate program in mechanical technology (may substitute for up to 1 year).
Ability to obtain a California driver’s license and pass OSHA medicals.
Experience with power plant controls and safety procedures.

Responsibilities

Operate, monitor, maintain, and repair boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, and related central plant equipment.
Operate cogeneration, electrical generation, distribution, and related systems.
Use building automation to optimize energy efficiency and schedules.
Perform preventive and corrective maintenance and testing of repairs.
Conduct water treatment and chemical analyses for boiler/chiller systems.
