Job summary

The Autism Society of North Carolina is seeking a Camp Royall Director to lead a nationally recognized camp for individuals with autism, overseeing programming, staff, a $1.5M budget, property and donor relations. The role requires a strategic, compassionate leader who can foster an inclusive, safe environment.

Reporting to the Recreation and Camp Services Director, you will recruit and train staff, manage operations across facilities, and collaborate with other departments to deliver year‑round

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a field related to developmental disabilities or equivalent,
• 4+ years of supervised experience working with individuals with autism
• OR 2 years of supervisory experience in a residential camp plus 4 years of experience with autism services

Responsibilities

• Shape the Camp Experience — bring vision to camp programming and oversee annual calendar; serve as primary contact for parents and guardians.
• Lead and Develop Your Team — supervise staff; design and deliver training on behavior management, safety, and operations.
• Drive Financial Health — assist in annual budget planning and fiscal management; collaborate with Development to cultivate donors.
• Recruit and Grow Our Community — lead staff recruitment to meet staffing benchmarks; promote programs to attract participants, interns, and volunteers.
• Collaborate Across the Organization — work cross-functionally with departments to keep operations aligned with organizational goals.
• Oversee Property and Facilities — coordinate maintenance and improvements with property staff.
• Manage Administrative Operations — work with HR on staff matters and oversee program registration.

The Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) is seeking an, organized, and mission-driven leader to serve as Camp Royall Director. Camp Royall is the nation's largest and oldest camp for people with autism. Nestled on 133 wooded acres near Pittsboro, Camp Royall offers year-round programming — from summer overnight and day camps to teen retreats, adult weekends, and family fun days — where campers ages 4 to adulthood build skills, gain confidence, and make lifelong friends in a loving, accepting environment.

Reporting to the Recreation and Camp Services Director, the Camp Royall Director provides oversight for every aspect of camp life — programming and camper experience, staff hiring and training, a $1.5M annual operating budget, property and facilities, and community and donor relationships. In this role, you'll be the driving force behind an inclusive, joyful, and safe environment where campers with autism can thrive, and where staff and families feel supported every step of the way.

About Camp Royall

Located in Chatham County near Pittsboro, Camp Royall is a hub of year-round activity that offers a caring, supportive atmosphere and celebrates each individual. Campers enjoy classic camp fun — swimming, arts and crafts, hiking, hayrides, and boating — all within a structured environment designed around the needs of individuals with autism. Camp Royall is accredited by the American Camping Association, and counselor-to-camper ratios of 1:1 or 1:2 ensure every camper is understood, supported, and celebrated.

This role blends office-based work with plenty of time outdoors, in the gym, and in other recreational settings — where it can be loud, warm, and sometimes a little smelly. ASNC provides the tools needed for a comfortable office workspace and will help identify what's needed to succeed in camp's outdoor and recreational environment. What You'll Do

• Shape the Camp Experience — Bring vision and creativity to camp programming — building the annual calendar, overseeing the design and implementation of engaging activities, and serving as the primary point of contact for parents and guardians.
• Lead and Develop Your Team — Supervise a team of full and part-time staff. Design and deliver comprehensive staff training covering behavior management, safety protocols, and daily operations — setting your team up to succeed and campers up to flourish.
• Drive Financial Health — Partner on annual budget planning, oversee fiscal management year-round, and keep programs aligned with revenue goals. Collaborate with the Development team to nurture relationships with current and prospective donors.
• Recruit and Grow Our Community — Lead staff recruitment and hiring to meet key benchmarks, while promoting camp programs to attract participants, staff, interns, and volunteers alike.
• Collaborate Across the Organization — Work cross-functionally with departments throughout the organization to keep camp operations running smoothly and in sync with broader organizational goals.
• Oversee Property and Facilities — Partner with property staff on ongoing maintenance, facility improvements, and event setup — helping shape a camp environment that's safe, welcoming, and built to last.
• Manage Administrative Operations — Collaborate with HR on employee matters and oversee camp program registration, ensuring smooth operations behind the scenes.

What You Bring

• A Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university related to developmental disabilities, plus at least 4 years of supervised experience working with individuals with autism
• OR 2 years of supervisory experience in a residential camp setting, plus 4 years of supervised experience in a similar setting serving people with autism
