Organizational Background

Western Yearly Meeting of Friends is a regional Quaker body serving meetings and churches in Indiana and Illinois. Rooted in the Religious Society of Friends, Western Yearly Meeting supports spiritual formation, peace witness, youth leadership, and faithful community life. One of its core ministries is Quaker Haven Camp, a summer camp dedicated to nurturing young people through community living, Quaker spiritual practices, and values of peace, justice, and integrity.

Position Overview

The Camp Education Intern is an immersive summer learning position for students who are interested in peace studies, education, religion, social justice, history, or youth development.

The intern will participate fully in the life of Quaker Haven Camp while gaining hands‑on experience in:

• Peace education and conflict transformation
• Quaker spiritual practices and history
• Restorative justice approaches with youth
• Cross‑cultural communication and community living
• Experiential education in an outdoor camp setting

Key Responsibilities

Peace Education & Youth Engagement

• Assist counselors and program staff in teaching campers about peacebuilding, nonviolence, and cooperative community life.
• Support age‑appropriate activities that introduce children and youth to:
  • Conflict resolution and restorative justice practices
  • Empathy, listening, and mutual respect
  • Living peacefully in diverse communities
• Help facilitate group discussions, games, and reflective activities that connect camp experiences to broader peace and justice themes.

Quaker Practice & Spiritual Formation

• Learn core Quaker beliefs and practices, including silent worship, communal discernment, and testimonies such as peace, integrity, simplicity, and equality.
• Assist in preparing and supporting worship opportunities and reflection times for campers.
• Model respectful participation in Quaker community life and spiritual practices, regardless of personal faith background.

Practical Camp Operations

• Assist with daily camp tasks that support the safe and smooth operation of camp life, such as:
  • Activity setup and cleanup
  • Supporting meal times and transitions
  • Helping maintain shared spaces
• Gain experience in teamwork, time management, and adaptability in a residential camp environment.

Educational Reflection & Mentorship

• Participate in regular check‑ins with supervisors to reflect on learning goals and experiences.
• Connect camp experiences to academic interests such as peace studies, education, sociology, religion, or nonprofit leadership.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the internship, the intern will have:

• Practical experience teaching peace and justice concepts to children and youth
• Foundational understanding of Quaker theology, history, and spiritual practice
• Exposure to restorative justice principles in applied settings
• Enhanced cross‑cultural communication and leadership skills
• Deeper insight into how values‑based nonprofit organizations operate in practice
