Organizational Background

Western Yearly Meeting of Friends is a regional Quaker body serving meetings and churches in Indiana and Illinois. Rooted in the Religious Society of Friends, Western Yearly Meeting supports spiritual formation, peace witness, youth leadership, and faithful community life. One of its core ministries is Quaker Haven Camp, a summer camp dedicated to nurturing young people through community living, Quaker spiritual practices, and values of peace, justice, and integrity.

Position Overview

The Camp Counselor is the primary caregiver and leader for a cabin group of campers during the week. Counselors live with their campers, guide them through daily activities, and create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where each child feels seen, respected, and supported. In this role, the counselor is responsible for the overall well‑being of their cabin, including supervision, emotional support, encouragement of positive behavior, and attention to basic health and safety needs. Counselors help campers navigate the rhythms of camp life—meals, activities, worship, rest, and play—while fostering a sense of belonging and shared responsibility within the group.

Beyond supervision, the Camp Counselor plays a key role in shaping the camp’s learning and community experience. Counselors model Quaker values such as peace, integrity, simplicity, equality, and care for one another, and help campers practice these values in everyday interactions. They support campers in resolving conflicts in constructive ways, encourage cooperation and empathy, and help children grow in independence and confidence. Through attentive presence, thoughtful guidance, and joyful participation, counselors help make each camper’s week at Quaker Haven a meaningful experience of community, growth, and care.
