Job summary

Valley Youth House seeks a Summer Camp Counselor to supervise campers in daily activities, promote safety, and foster a sense of belonging. You will lead outdoor, art and swimming activities while modeling positive behavior and clear communication with families.

The role emphasizes responsible supervision, teamwork with activity coordinators, and adherence to camp philosophies. Seasonal/occasional overnight duties may apply, with benefits eligibility after initial period.

Responsibilities

• Supervise activities of children, including games, art, swimming, and outdoor activities.
• Provide an enjoyable experience for each camper.
• Supervise campers in cabins on overnight weeks.
• Set a good example in promptness, manners, language, appearance and health.
• Maintain group unity and a sense of belonging among campers.
• Contact parents as needed to maintain good public relations.
• Check group attendance each morning and monitor safety at all times.
• Know whereabouts of the group at all times and assist with activities.
• Maintain positive relations with parents and staff and assist with cleaning duties.
• Report program changes and equipment needs to the Summer Program Director.

Essential Functions of the Summer Camp Counselor:

• Supervise activities of children, including but not limited to, games, art, swimming, and outside activities.
• Provide an enjoyable experience for each camper.
• Supervise campers in cabins on overnight camp weeks.
• Set a good example in promptness, manners, language, appearance, and health.
• Set a good example in respect and care for the facilities and the out-of-doors.
• Create and maintain group unity by making everyone feel a sense of belonging.
• Contact parents of campers as needed during camp to maintain good public relations.
• Check group attendance each morning.
• Keep the safety of campers in mind at all times. Campers are never to be left unattended.
• Know the whereabouts of the group at all times, including early morning arrivals, bus, camp,
• Maintain positive relations with parents and other staff
• Assist in maintaining and cleaning of assigned areas.
• Report all program changes and equipment needs to the Summer Program Director.
• Assist Activity Coordinators while participating in their activity.

Minimal Qualifications for the Summer Camp Counselor:

• Professional experience working with children from diverse backgrounds.
• A mature individual who can identify with and adapt to the goals and philosophies of Positive Youth Development and embrace the core values of Camp Fowler.
• Experience supervising staff in a professional setting.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Enthusiasm, patience, and self-control

Physical Requirements for the Summer Camp Counselor

• Capacity to work long hours in various weather conditions, including heat, humidity, and rain, while maintaining energy and enthusiasm. X Constant

• Walking, hiking, and movement across the camp's 43-acre property, which includes uneven terrain, wooded areas, and hills, multiple times a day. X Constant

• Ability to lift and carry up to 25-50 pounds, which may include supplies, equipment, or assisting with setting up activities. X Occasionally
