POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Provides direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall camp experience.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Assists as directed with administrative tasks that support the camp which may include enrolling children, preparing newsletters, communicating policies/procedures to families, etc.
  2. Availability to work throughout the camp season and has flexibility to work early morning to late evening hours in accordance with camp needs.
  3. Assists with the day to day operations which includes but is not limited to sign-in/out, scheduling, handling parental concerns, ensuring safety and security of all campers and staff.
  4. Effectively communicates with supervisor and co-workers to provide feedback for program improvement, concerns, etc.
  5. Build authentic relationships with camp participants and their family while also providing connections with other YMCA staff and members to enhance membership.
  6. Oversee staff on a day to day basis at camp and other branches/locations as assigned.
  7. Assists Camp Director with the development and implementation of purposeful programming and curriculum, daily routines, and program procedures, helping to ensure high quality programs.
  8. Leads counselors in the planning and assists with the implementation of activities as needed.
  9. Ensure the safety and welfare of campers and staff by reporting all accidents immediately to the Camp Director.
  10. Reports suspected abuse in accordance with the PA Child Protective Services Law and YMCA policy.
  11. Provides staff with descriptive feedback for redirecting challenging camper behaviors. Supports Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) implementation. Effectively communicates behavior concerns with parents.
  12. Assists with work detail and camp clean-up.
  13. Act in accordance with the YMCA philosophy, camp goals, objectives, and policies as stated in the YMCA Mission Statement and Personnel Policy.
  14. Assume responsibilities of director in the absence of the Camp Director.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Attained or be pursuing a degree in education, recreation, sports management, human services or other youth related majors.
  2. High school diploma or GED required.
  3. Three years of experience working with children required and experience working in a day camp setting preferred.
  4. Obtain a State Police, Child Abuse, NSOR and/or FBI clearance in compliance with Child Protective Services Law and YMCA policy.
  5. Must have or obtain Pediatric First Aide/CPR and AED certification.

    • Ability to hear voices, understand and distinguish speech and other sounds to communicate, answer phones and respond to alarms/emergencies.
  • Hazardous Conditions/Materials Exposure:
    • Continuous exposure to outdoor elements.
