Job description

The Gardener Level 1 is an entry level position in the Gardens Operations department that will participate and be a part of a horticulture and landscape maintenance team within an assigned Garden area.

Responsibilities:

1. Maintains high standards of personal appearance and grooming to include wearing a nametag when working.
2. Complies at all times with Callaway standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient operations.
3. Keeps accurate records to include pesticide application logs.
4. Reports needs for materials and equipment to direct supervisor.
5. Keeps assigned small tools clean and in good repair.
6. Maintains the horticultural standards of Callaway Gardens with a sense of urgency and focus with attention to detail in an efficient and productive manner.
7. Practices proper horticultural techniques to include planting, watering, weeding, pruning, pest control, dead heading, and plant identification.
8. Operates equipment properly and in a safe manner. Insures equipment used is cleaned and properly maintained.
9. Prioritizes daily tasks and weekly projects with direction from department supervisor.
10. Works with volunteers as needed.
11. Ability to work with little or no supervision.
12. Follows instructions, written or verbal.
13. Attends all meetings/training as required by supervisor or manager.
14. Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor or management.

Qualifications:

1. Experience in Horticulture/Landscaping helpful.
2. Must have a valid driver's license.
3. Must complete WPS training within 5 days of hire or have a current GA commercial pesticide license.
4. Long hours sometimes required.
5. Potentially hard physical labor, lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects.
6. Ability to stand, squat and/or kneel for long periods of time.
7. Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather.
8. Ability to operate small tools, lawn and gardening equipment.
9. Ability to operate heavy equipment preferred.

Interacts with all guests and all team members, at all times, in a friendly, service-oriented manner. Maintains regular attendance in compliance with Callaway Gardens' standards, as required by scheduling that will vary according to the needs of Callaway Gardens' business levels to include some holidays and weekends.
