Job description

The Gardener Level 1 is an entry level position in the Gardens Operations department that will participate and be a part of a horticulture and landscape maintenance team within an assigned Garden area.

Responsibilities:

1. Maintain the horticultural standards of Callaway Gardens with a sense of urgency and focus with attention to detail in an efficient and productive manner.
2. Practice proper horticultural techniques to include planting, watering, weeding, pruning, pest control, dead heading, and plant identification.
3. Operate equipment properly and in a safe manner, ensuring equipment used is cleaned and properly maintained.
4. Keep accurate records to include pesticide application logs and report needs for materials and equipment to direct supervisor.
5. Interact with all guests and team members in a friendly, service-oriented manner.
6. Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming, including wearing a nametag when working.
7. Follow instructions, both written and verbal, and attend all meetings/training as required by supervisor or manager.
8. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or management.

Minimum Requirements:

1. Experience in Horticulture/Landscaping helpful.
2. Must have a valid driver's license.
3. Must complete WPS training within 5 days of hire or have a current GA commercial pesticide license.
4. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or otherwise moving objects.
5. Ability to stand, squat and/or kneel for long periods of time and work outdoors in all types of weather.
6. Ability to operate small tools, lawn, and gardening equipment; heavy equipment operation preferred.

Be able to positively motivate and lead a team, conveying information and ideas clearly and effectively so that ownership of high levels of guest service is understood to be the role of each individual team member. Be able to evaluate and select among alternative courses of action quickly and accurately, and work well in high-pressure situations while maintaining composure and objectivity, including the ability to listen carefully to and resolve guest issues to the satisfaction of the affected guests. Be able to identify potential guest issues and develop methodologies to prevent or limit their impact during guest visits. Be able to assimilate complex information and data from various sources and consider, adjust, or modify to meet the constraints of particular needs.
