Job summary

American Electric Power (AEP) seeks a Designer Associate to prepare, develop and coordinate engineering drawings and related documentation. You will assist engineers, develop study layouts, cost estimates and QA/QC of drawings to support project decisions.

Your role involves coordinating design activities, checking drawings, and training other staff while adhering to safety, compliance and company policies. Position may require overtime and travel to job sites.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in applied science (AAS) drafting and CAD or equivalent experience in engineering technology.
• Equivalent experience without AAS: high school graduate with 4 years in electric utility drafting or CAD work.
• Proficient with conventional drafting symbols and methods; able to distinguish colors.
• Must be able to operate a vehicle and have a valid driver's license.
• Shift work or overtime may be required. Occasional travel to substations or power plants.

Responsibilities

• Develop and coordinate design drawings and sketches.
• Proficiency in CAD software and MS Office for design tasks.
• Prepare calculations and conduct design studies as required.
• Complete drawings and related information for construction.
• Check manufacturers' drawings and shop details; suggest changes.
• Coordinate and review work of others when required.
• Submit progress reports and assist in training others.
