Job Title: Cable Installation Technician

Job Description

This role offers a long-term career opportunity for a cable installation technician to join a growing low-voltage team in the Charleston area. You will work on structured cabling, cellular enhancement, audio/visual, security, access control and data centre projects across commercial, educational and healthcare environments. The position suits individuals with experience in cable installation who are career-focused, reliable and eager to develop their skills with modern low-voltage technologies.

Responsibilities

• Pull, route, label, terminate and punch down low-voltage and data cabling, including CAT5, CAT6, coax and fibre, in commercial environments.
• Install, dress and secure cabling using appropriate supports such as J-hooks in line with standard installation practices and relevant codes.
• Work on new construction and renovation projects in schools, hospitals and other commercial facilities, adapting to different site conditions.
• Assist with testing, fault-finding and troubleshooting of cabling installations to ensure performance and reliability.
• Interpret low-voltage drawings and blueprints sufficiently to identify key symbols, such as data jack symbols and device locations.
• Perform terminations on patch panels, 110/66 blocks and related hardware, ensuring neatness, correct colour coding and compliance with standards.
• Support the installation and set-up of access control, security systems, CCTV, alarm systems and wireless access points under guidance.
• Learn and develop skills in audio/visual installations and related low-voltage technologies as part of ongoing professional growth.
• Follow established quality standards, safety procedures and industry regulations, including safe working practices on construction sites and in healthcare facilities.
• Deliver professional and courteous customer service while working alongside technicians, project teams and customers on-site.
• Collaborate closely with colleagues to complete projects on time, contributing to a positive, team-oriented work culture.
• Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and ensure work areas are kept organised and safe.
• Adapt to varying schedules, including occasional evening or shift work, particularly on hospital projects that require off-hours work.
• Travel as needed to regional project locations such as Charlotte, Myrtle Beach and Florence, while primarily working in the Charleston area.

Essential Skills

• Previous experience working with structured cabling or low-voltage systems, including cable installation, termination and punch down of CAT5 and CAT6 cabling.
• Practical knowledge of pulling, terminating, dressing and labelling cables in commercial environments.
• Familiarity with terminations on patch panels and 110/66 blocks.
• Understanding of low-voltage diagrams, including recognition of symbols such as the triangle symbol for data jacks.
• Ability to interpret blueprints and low-voltage drawings sufficiently to identify key symbols and installation requirements.
• Working knowledge of standard cabling colour codes, including orange, white/orange, green, white/blue, blue, white/green, brown and white/brown pairs.
• Experience working with different cable types such as CAT5, CAT6, coax and fibre.
• Ability to work safely and effectively in commercial construction environments, including schools and hospitals.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience with access control systems, including card readers and door hardware, is beneficial.
• Exposure to security systems, CCTV and alarm systems is advantageous.
• Familiarity with wireless access point installation and related infrastructure is a plus.
• Experience working in hospitals and schools, or other complex commercial facilities, is preferred.
• Basic understanding of the difference between RJ45 and RJ11 jacks, including their typical uses for data and phone connections.
• Knowledge of relevant installation codes and best practices, such as typical distances between J-hooks to prevent cable sagging.
• Possession of personal hand tools suitable for cable installation work is advantageous.
• OSHA or equivalent safety certification is beneficial.
• Backgrd in athletics or similar activities demonstrating discipline, drive and teamwork may be considered favourably.
• Demonstrated personality, drive and motivation to build a long-term career in the low-voltage field.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Hanahan, SC.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $26.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
