Qualifications

General Description

Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Maintenance, the C-Mechanic is required to perform a range of duties and responsibilities on Alexandria Transit Company’s (ATC) fleet vehicles that can differ from day to day including routine maintenance work to specialized repairs. This is an apprentice-level role that performs basic repairs and maintenance on all DASH vehicles and equipment. This position has fundamental skills in interpreting and understanding service procedure manuals and utilizing technology to perform vehicle systems diagnosis and scheduled maintenance services. C-Mechanics test drive fleet vehicles to assure proper performance and completeness of repairs and report observations.

Mechanics work under the general guidance of the Foreman on duty in the absence of the Deputy Director of Maintenance, and as needed, based on shift and work schedules.

Responsibilities/Essential Functions
  • Performs basic repairs and maintenance on all DASH vehicles and equipment as required.
  • Performs Preventative Maintenance Inspections (PMI) and inspects equipment for any necessary repairs, and performs basic tire work such as replacement, rotation, tread depth checks, etc.
  • Performs inspection, troubleshooting, and basic repairs on diesel and non-diesel equipment and vehicles including chassis components, air brake systems, general engine work, suspension, and drive train.
  • Coordinates and communicates effectively with the parts and inventory department on the request of required parts for necessary repairs and maintenance.
  • Completes and submits required electronic documentation and reporting of all assigned repairs or service/inspections in a timely fashion via computer software/programs. Documents and records parts used and reports accurate process of steps taken to repair DASH vehicles and equipment.
  • Follows established maintenance policies, procedures, and protocols including OEM procedures for all maintenance and repairs.
  • Under the general guidance and instruction of the shop Foreman performs any required or necessary job duties such as repairing, inspecting, and troubleshooting. Reports concerns or observations to Foreman on duty.
  • Utilizes computer software, service, and parts manuals to interpret and diagnose failures; performs necessary mechanical repairs.
  • Utilizes computer software to log daily work orders and search for required equipment for repairs.
  • Assists and supports A and B mechanics and shop Foreman with various assignments as required.
  • Maintains a clean and safe workspace and follows all required Company safety policies, procedures and local, state, and federal safety rules and regulations.
  • May assists A-B Mechanics or Shop Foreman, with making road calls and/or service calls as needed.
  • Performs servicing, charging, and refueling of all DASH vehicles as necessary.
  • Regularly checks and maintains fleet fluid levels including engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, etc.
  • Performs the steam cleaning of bus engine compartments, radiators, etc.
  • Maintains an accurate log and record of all vehicle cleanings that have been performed.
  • May be required to attend regular departmental meetings and other mandatory staff meetings as needed.
  • Stays informed on industry trends as they relate to the maintenance and repairs of vehicles.
  • Attends trainings, refresher courses, and professional development opportunities as required by the company or the position.
  • Contributes to and supports a positive and safe work environment.
  • Cooperatively and efficiently performs related tasks and duties as required.
QualificationsKnowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of transit vehicle operations.
  • Thorough knowledge of automotive maintenance and transit vehicle maintenance.
  • Basic working knowledge of computers, hardware, and software programs specifically those related to transit operations and those including Microsoft Office Suites (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.)
  • Ability to assess vehicles and/or equipment to accurately diagnose and repair issues.
  • Ability to report and translate basic information in electronic format relating to the repair and maintenance of ATC vehicles.
  • Ability to use hand tools, pneumatic tools and hydraulic tools including ancillary shop equipment.
  • Ability to interpret and understand manuals and schematics.
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic electrical wiring.
  • Ability to use basic office technology and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to multi-task and perform work with frequent interruptions.
  • High degree and sense of urgency and accuracy.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

  • Lifts heavy loads at times to include, brake drums, shoe assemblies, steering gear box, batteries, etc. (<60 lbs.)
Additional/Miscellaneous/Special Requirements:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within 60 days of hire a Virginia, Maryland, or District of Columbia Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and Air-Brake endorsement.
  • Acceptable background check upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Negative pre-employment drug screen results upon hire and as required by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations and TMA policy, throughout entirety of employment.
Education and Experience:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum one (1) year of vehicle maintenance experience required.
  • Working experience with basic computer software and vehicle maintenance software and programs is required.
  • Experience using a basic set of mechanic tools is required.
  • Must possess a basic set of mechanic tools.
  • Diesel mechanic experience is highly preferred.
  • Experience working in a Union environment a plus.
  • Relevant certification or training from a technical school is a plus.
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college with or technical school may be considered in lieu of years of experience.
