Overview

The Business Office Manager is supervised by the Chief Financial Officer with the responsibility to develop the Business Office department in a manner that enables the hospital to achieve its cash collection and accounts receivable goals through management of the business office staff and related functions, including billing, and collection/follow-up.

Responsibilities
  • Direct inpatient collection efforts to meet organization and business office goals and objectives.
  • Ensure appropriate in-house amounts due from clients are collected prior to discharge.
  • Establish and monitor collector goals and timetables.
  • Provide client financial counseling as appropriate to resolve account problems including disputed amounts and credit balances.
  • Maintain an effective exchange of account information between business office staff, other hospital departments, and external agencies.
  • Recommend benchmarks against which to measure the performance of the business office operations.
  • Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements.
  • Maintain a system of controls over billing/collection transactions.
  • Maintain a documented system of billing/collection policies and procedures.
  • Manage cash collection; maintain journal and receipts accurately.
  • Ensure maximum reimbursement through measures including writing appeals on payment and billing issues and initiating retro reviews.
  • Assure all adjustments are posted accurately and timely; maintain administrative adjustment logs and documentation.
Qualifications

Education: Associate's degree in Finance or Business Administration required. Alternatively, 5 to 10 years of relevant experience in a Business Office Manager role may be considered in lieu of an Associate's degree.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in hospital admitting, billing, and collections required.
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must demonstrate expertise in analysis, decision making, autonomy, time management, oral and written communication, and computer use.
  • Good communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to resolve and reconcile traditional Medicare claims through the DDE system.
  • Good assessment skills and understanding of the insurance and managed care arenas.
  • Ability to function independently.
  • Able to communicate the hospital objectives and goals to outside individuals and referral sources.
