Job description

Business Intelligence & Data Warehouse Manager

Join to apply for the Business Intelligence & Data Warehouse Manager role at Benchmark Education Company

Position Purpose

At Benchmark, we are focused on building fantastic software to help our business stakeholders and customers meet the challenges facing learners and teachers today and in the future. We are seeking a forward-thinking Business Intelligence/Data Warehouse Manager to lead our team of great problem-solvers and high-performing team of BI & Data Analysts. This team designs, builds, and operates dashboards and operational reports using Power BI and SSRS, supported by a Data Warehouse running on Azure SQL. It is responsible for supporting a complex mix of internal business stakeholders in delivering exceptional experiences to our customers.

This is a hands‑on leadership and coaching role – as a guide and mentor who ensures the team delivers high‑quality analytics solutions. The Manager works closely with Product Management, Architecture, and business stakeholders to define the roadmap, shape team capabilities, and drive execution.

As we evolve our data strategy, this role is key to building a culture focused on solving business problems and providing insight‑driven analysis. We are embedding analytics into everyday workflows, and we envision a world where team members see their key metrics seamlessly within their daily work processes, customized to their roles. We aim to empower business users through governed, scalable, and self‑service analytics - balancing accessibility with consistency and data integrity.

We also aspire to expand into advanced analytics, including statistical methods and AI/ML techniques, and this role will play a foundational part in preparing the team and environment for that next phase.

Job Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Coaching
  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of 4–7 Data and BI Analysts.
  • Focus on developing team skills in both technical delivery and business acumen.
  • Provide coaching and hands‑on technical guidance, while avoiding direct task ownership.
  • Promote a culture of ownership that values curiosity and tenaciousness in problem‑solving and quality in execution.
Strategy & Execution
  • Partner with Product Management and Architecture to define and evolve the BI and data platform roadmap.
  • Evolve the team’s culture from delivering bespoke reports & dashboards to planned and designed business‑driven problem‑solving.
  • Foster proactive analysis that delivers actionable insights—not just data.
Data Architecture & Governance
  • Guide the evolution of our data models and pipelines in Azure SQL.
  • Champion metric governance to ensure consistent definitions across the organization.
  • Standardize and improve the reusability and scalability of dashboards, reports, and datasets.
Stakeholder & Business Engagement
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to deeply understand their processes and goals.
  • Help translate business needs into analytical opportunities and meaningful KPIs.
  • Be a thought partner to the business—not just a service provider.
Innovation & Advanced Analytics Readiness
  • Lay groundwork for incorporating advanced analytics, such as statistical and ML‑based models.
  • Stay informed on emerging analytics trends and techniques, and prepare the team to adopt.
  • Encourage experimentation and exploration of new approaches to data‑driven decision‑making.
Operational Excellence
  • Use Agile/Scrum methodologies to manage work effectively and deliver iteratively.
  • Remove blockers—technical or organizational—that inhibit team performance.
  • Monitor and improve team throughput, report reliability, and data accessibility.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing, or Analytics.
  • 2+ years of experience managing or leading data or BI teams.
  • Expert‑level hands‑on experience with Power BI, SSRS, and Azure SQL or other comparable BI / data technology stack.
  • Proven ability to coach and elevate teams, especially in visualisation, data modelling, and insight delivery.
  • Experience collaborating cross‑functionally with product, engineering, and business stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of dimensional modelling, data governance, and KPI design.
  • Proficient in Agile/Scrum frameworks and tools.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in CS, engineering, software engineering, or related field.
  • Experience embedding analytics into operational tools, portals, or workflows.
  • Exposure to advanced analytics, statistical techniques, or ML concepts (even if not directly implementing models).
  • Broad familiarity to different data‑related technology stacks from major vendors (Informatica, AWS, Snowflake, etc.).
  • Ability to bridge technical detail and business context, turning data into decisions.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure data services beyond SQL (e.g., Azure Data Factory, Synapse).
  • Experience shifting a team from reactive reporting to proactive, insight‑driven analytics.
