Job summary

The Port of Seattle is seeking a Business Intelligence Analyst I to lead basic to intermediate BI work, translating requirements into analytics and visualizations that inform business cases and drive cost savings. You will design BI solutions with Tableau, Excel, and Alteryx, and support reporting across Port-wide initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Six months of data analysis experience with large data sets (incl. SQL and BI tools).
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in CS/IT/InfoSec or related field.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain basic to intermediate BI solutions using Tableau, Excel, and Alteryx.
  • Serve as a technical resource for reporting and analytics projects and respond to ad hoc problems.
  • Advise on analytics project design, best practices, and documentation for reporting solutions.
  • Assist in managing Tableau Cloud environment, data sources, security, and subscriptions.
  • Bring data to life with storytelling and advanced data visualization across multiple data sources.
  • Prepare materials for presentations and participate in local conferences to share BI insights.
  • Maintain knowledge of BI tech, architecture, methodologies, and best practices and train others.

What you'll be doing

As a Business Intelligence (BI) analyst, you will be responsible for managing concurrent analytical projects. You will also be involved in project work with Port-wide reach that requires some consultation with organizational and functional departments, and you will translate simple requirements into analytical applications and solutions that inform business cases, with significant cost and process savings and contribute directly to the success of department business plans and key enterprise strategic goals.

  • You will design, develop, and maintain basic to intermediate BI solutions using technologies such as Tableau, Excel, and Alteryx.
  • You will function as a technical resource for reporting and analytical projects, be familiar with data sources used in day-to-day operations, and respond quickly to ad hoc problems.
  • You will provide advice for analytics projects, including utilizing best practices for the design and development of analytical solutions and data visualizations, as well as reviewing and contributing to technical documentation to ensure accurate development of reporting solutions.
  • You will assist in managing the Tableau Cloud environment including data sources, security, and subscriptions.
  • You will bring data to life using storytelling and advanced data visualization techniques. You will also use data visualization tools to communicate actionable insights across multiple data sources.
  • You will actively participate in the business intelligence community by preparing materials for presentations at local conferences as well as attending conferences and training to bring fresh ideas to the organization.
  • You will continuously maintain an understanding of Business Intelligence technology, architecture, methodologies, and best practices and build additional BI capability through training programs and one-on-one assistance.
Who you are
  • Experienced – You possess six (6) months of entry-level experience in data analysis and working with large data sets. This includes using SQL and data visualization tools such as Tableau, ETL tool like Alteryx, and/or with data modeling and data warehousing concepts. This may include internship experience.
  • Desired – We hope you have a bachelor’s degree or above in computer science, math, information technology, and/or information security.

You also have experience with data modeling and data warehousing, understanding business processes, and have basic knowledge of relational database design and research methods.
  • Efficient Communicator – You have strong communication skills to present findings to stakeholders in a clear and concise manner.
  • Analytical – You can think critically and solve problems using data-driven insights and can pay attention to details and ensure data accuracy. You can also manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
  • Adaptable – You can work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and can work independently and as part of a team.
What else you need to know
  • Work Schedule – Your normal work schedule will be Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role. Weekend on-call coverage may be required as needed.
  • Work Environment - This work will take place in a hybrid/in-office setting at Management’s discretion.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement– Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
  • Security Requirements – As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.
