Job description

The Business Development Director is responsible for identifying, pursuing, and securing new business opportunities and funding to drive growth for Med-IQ’s risk management and patient safety (RMPS) education and services portfolio, as well as medical education programs. This role combines direct sales to healthcare providers, hospitals, and insurance groups with grant development efforts targeting pharmaceutical companies and other funders.

The Director will achieve revenue targets within an assigned territory by demonstrating expertise in prospecting, competitor research, lead generation, and a proven ability to close deals while managing expenses effectively. This position will collaborate with internal operations, clinical teams, and cross-functional partners to develop compelling proposals, manage a complex sales pipeline, and ensure programs align with industry standards and funder objectives. The role also involves sharing market feedback to implement new business initiatives and deliver on both short- and long-term organizational objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Identify, qualify, and secure new business opportunities and funding streams in risk management education, patient safety, and accredited medical education environments. This includes proactively engaging contacts who have not previously expressed interest in Med-IQ and persuasively communicating Med-IQ’s value proposition both verbally and in writing.
  • Prospect for leads and engage key decision makers at healthcare organizations, insurance entities, and pharmaceutical companies, leveraging CRM tools, and existing relationships (e.g., Salesforce, LinkedIn Navigator). This would also include demonstrating product features and accurately describe available services in the RMPS portfolio through phone calls, web conferences and in-person meetings.
  • Build and present compelling proposals and grant submissions that communicate the organization’s value proposition and strategic fit.
  • Partner with internal teams to develop concept ideas for educational programs, aligning funding proposals to client/funder priorities and the organization’s mission.
  • Manage the sales and award lifecycle from first contact through contract negotiation and final closure, including complex financial negotiations and compliance checks.
  • Accurately forecast, report, and track pipeline activity, revenue, and grant prospects.
  • Attend conferences, trade shows, and meetings to generate leads and strengthen relationships with prospective and current clients across the healthcare and life sciences ecosystem.
  • Adhere to and maintain a deadline-driven and process-orientated business environment.
  • Ensure strict compliance with relevant industry regulations (e.g., ACCME, PhRMA, FDA) and organizational policies.
  • Operate as a collaborative team player, driving accountability and integrity while advocating for the organization’s mission and values.
  • Participate in educational strategy planning for clinical education grant proposals. Provide clinical insight and identify professional practice gaps in the published medical literature.
  • Contribute to the design of educational platforms that align with topic, target audience needs/preferences, and available budget. Provide content-related information for grant submissions, letters of intent, and requests for more information.
  • Write educational needs assessments. Manage freelance writers for needs assessment development as necessary.
  • Travel Up to 50%, primarily for key distributor/client meetings (including events) to achieve business objectives.
  • Perform other duties, as assigned.
Education, Experience, Competencies & Values
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (preferred). For medial education, backgrounds in medical, nursing, or clinical education is a plus. For clinical strategy, advanced degree required (Mater’s or Doctorate in a medical or scientific discipline).
  • Minimum five years of business-to-business (B2B) sales, grant development, or business development experience. For medical education, business development experience in medical education, healthcare, or pharmaceutical/medical device industry. For clinical strategy, minimum 3 to 5 years of experience in medical writing, clinical content development, CME/CE program strategy, or related healthcare fields.
  • Knowledge of the healthcare risk management marketplace, medical malpractice insurance marketplace, and sophisticated broker relationships is preferred.

  • Deep understanding of sales cycles, account management, and CRM platforms (e.g., Salesforce).
  • Proficiency in creating persuasive presentations, product demonstrations, and customized proposals.
  • Skilled negotiator with experience closing large, complex deals/contracts.
  • Exceptional relationship builder and communicator – able to connect with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Discipline and dedication to work remotely without day to day in person supervision.
  • Strategic, solutions‑oriented mindset.
