Company Overview
Strategy Engineering is a design-build contractor serving the energy industry, delivering engineering, procurement, and construction services to clients across the upstream, midstream, renewable, utility, and power development sectors, as well as carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and modular LNG development. Strategy Engineering supports clients throughout North, Central, and South America.
Job Overview / Summary
Strategy Engineering and Consulting (SEC) is seeking a Business Development Manager with a proven record of selling turnkey equipment supply and turnkey design-build project solutions into power generation, industrial energy, and electrical infrastructure markets. This is a commercial, relationship-driven role rather than an engineering or technical services position; working knowledge of the technical landscape is helpful but not required.
Load growth from data centers and AI infrastructure, industrial electrification, and constrained interconnection queues have made speed to power the deciding factor in how capital projects get awarded. SEC is directing its turnkey equipment supply, design-build, and multi-disciplined EPCM capability toward that demand. This role builds the commercial front end of that strategy.
The Business Development Manager (BDM) handles all aspects of new and existing customer relationships within assigned markets and service lines. The objective is to grow existing accounts, open new clientele among hyperscalers, developers, IPPs, utilities, industrial owners, midstream gas operators, and electrical contracting partners, and continually pursue opportunities that increase long term revenue and expand SEC’s project experience in the power and energy sectors.
This position carries individual revenue accountability, with primary emphasis on new client acquisition. Performance is evaluated on qualified opportunities generated, proposal win rate, and revenue secured from new and existing client relationships.
Responsibilities and Duties
Market Development and Pipeline
- Own a named target account list spanning hyperscale and colocation operators, data center and power project developers, IPPs and utilities, industrial and manufacturing owners, midstream gas operators and processors, and electrical contracting and EPC partners.
- Build and manage a qualified pipeline sufficient to meet or exceed monthly and annual revenue targets, with disciplined forecast accuracy.
- Identify pursuits tied to speed to power and reliability constraints, including turnkey equipment packages and design-build project delivery, behind the meter and distributed generation, substation and switchyard scopes, power delivery and interconnection support, electrical distribution and power quality work, and industrial services.
- Monitor announced capital projects, interconnection queues, permitting activity, and regulatory filings to position SEC ahead of RFP release rather than reacting to it.
Client Relationship Management
- Maintain and expand existing service line accounts, identifying opportunities to broaden SEC's scope of services with current clients.
- Originate new client relationships and revenue streams that did not previously exist, independent of inherited or assigned accounts.
- Consistently and frequently conduct in person client check ins and sales calls.
- Map decision hierarchies inside target organizations, distinguishing technical evaluators, procurement gatekeepers, and executive sponsors, and cultivate internal advocates within each account.
- Serve as the primary commercial point of contact from first introduction through contract execution and post award relationship retention.
- Confer with the Project Management team to understand existing customer feedback and use that insight to drive additional service offerings and improvements.
Pursuit and Proposal Execution
- Collaborate weekly with Senior Management to review the Proposal and Prospect log.
- Partner with Project Management, discipline leads, and engineering SMEs on capture strategy, scope definition, technical differentiators, and pricing approach.
- Support proposal development, ensuring submitted qualifications and project experience accurately represent SEC’s demonstrated capability.
- Lead or support commercial negotiations covering scope, rate structures, terms, and master service agreement execution.
- Partner with Project Management and engineering team members for sales calls, lunch and learns, and proposals as needed.
Reporting and Internal Coordination
- Prepare sales update reports covering customer visit action items and outcomes, status of target client interactions, and upcoming client visit plans.
- Develop account plans that make sure all necessary internal resources are engaged to deliver exceptional service to clients.
- Work with the Director of Business Development and Project Management to ensure revenue goals are consistently met or exceeded.
- Keep accurate records of client information, sales activity, and customer data in the CRM.
Market Presence and Intelligence
- Attend high value industry events and conferences to network and establish relationships with potential clients.
- Represent SEC in industry organizations and technical forums relevant to power generation, data center infrastructure, and industrial energy markets.
- Gather and analyze market intelligence on competitor positioning, rate environments, and client capital planning cycles. Translate that intelligence into new target clients and service offerings.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Candidates must meet both of the following qualifications to be considered:
- A minimum of 8 years of business development or sales experience selling capital equipment, engineered systems, or project-based delivery into power generation, electrical infrastructure, or industrial energy markets.
- Established, active relationships with decision makers in one or more of the following markets: power generation development, hyperscale and data center, industrial and manufacturing, or midstream gas.
Additional favorable requirements:
- Professional background with an electrical gear or generator OEM, an equipment packager or systems integrator, an EPC or design-build contractor, an electrical contractor, an energy services provider, or an owner/operator of power generation facilities.
- Demonstrates ability to sell turnkey equipment supply and design-build project solutions into capital project environments with multiple stakeholders and extended sales cycles.
- Commitment to driving and managing a pipeline of sales activity so that monthly and annual quotas are met or exceeded.
- Track record of meeting or exceeding quota and generating referenceable business.
- Ability to translate customer constraints and insights into defined SEC scopes of work and proposal strategy.
- Expertise navigating a complex sales process with multiple internal and external stakeholders while fostering teamwork and shared ownership.
- Strong interpersonal and presentation skills. Excellent written and oral communication. Builds relationships quickly and deepens them over time.
- Commitment to post sales customer success and long term relationship retention.
- Superior time and client management skills. Thrives independently and in a team environment.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, business, marketing, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel 50% as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience at an EPC, EPCM, engineering consultancy, owner’s engineer, or electrical contracting firm.
- Working familiarity with the market’s technical vocabulary (interconnection and speed to power, substation and switchyard scopes, distributed and behind the meter generation, medium voltage distribution, and construction management interfaces) is helpful but not required.
- Familiarity with mission critical and data center power infrastructure, including redundancy topology, on site generation, and medium voltage distribution.
- Working knowledge of ERCOT market structure and interconnection processes, with familiarity in other ISO and RTO regions.
