Prince Edward County Public Schools Transportation Department seeks a Transportation Monitor to assist the bus/van driver, maintain discipline, and support loading/unloading and seating arrangements for students.

The role emphasizes safety, incident reporting, and coordination with school staff and parents to ensure consistent behavioral strategies. FLSA: Nonexempt. Hourly position at $16 per hour.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED is required or preferred.
  • Familiarity with safety procedures, bus/van rules and emergency evaluation policies.
  • Experience supporting individuals with significant communication needs, including non-speaking or minimally verbal.
  • Experience as a Special Education Paraprofessional with children or individuals with disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the bus/van driver in maintaining discipline on the vehicle and monitors students during operation.
  • Instructs riders regarding responsible passenger behavior.
  • Reports personal absences in time for supervisor to secure a substitute monitor.
  • Assists in maintaining cleanliness on the vehicle at all times.
  • Provides age-appropriate activities to reduce misbehavior during transport.
  • Exercises good judgment concerning emergencies.
  • Monitors student behavior throughout route and intervenes during crises.
  • Collaborates with driver, school staff and parents to report incidents and maintain consistent behavioral strategies.

Education

High school diploma or GED
Familiar with safety procedures, bus/van rules and emergency evaluation policies
Experience supporting individuals with significant communication needs, including non-speaking or minimally verbal
Previous experience as a Special Education Paraprofessional working with children, preschool-aged children, or individuals with disabilities

Reports To: Bus Driver/Van Driver/Director of Transportation / Director of Special Education

FLSA Status: Nonexempt

Summary: Assist school bus/van driver in maintaining discipline and high risk behaviors while bus/van is in operation; maintain proper records and documentation; assist student loading, unloading and seating arrangements as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Assists the bus/van driver in maintaining discipline on school bus or van; monitors and assists students whilethe vehicleis in operation; maintains proper seating arrangements
  2. Instructs riders regarding being responsible passengers
  3. Reports personal absences in time for the supervisor to secure a substitute monitor
  4. Assist the bus/van driver in maintaining cleanliness on the vehicle at all times
  5. Assists the driver in providing age appropriate activities to reduce inappropriate behavior while transporting children
  6. Exercises good judgment concerning emergencies
  7. Monitor students behavior continuously during the route, intervene during crises
  8. Partner closely with driver, school staff, and parents to report incidents, document daily details, and maintain consistent behavioral strategies

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE (preferred)
  1. High school diploma or GED

  4. Previous experience as a Special Education Paraprofessional working with children, preschool-aged children, or individuals with disabilities
