Job summary

Middlesex County Public Schools in Saluda, Virginia is seeking a part-time Bus Shop Helper to support the transportation department. Under general supervision, you will help keep the bus garage safe, clean, and organized while assisting with basic vehicle maintenance.

Responsibilities include basic fluid checks, tire pressure, cleaning buses, handling inventory, logging work orders, and safely moving buses between bays. Training will be provided; prior experience not required.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Bus Shop Helper provides vital operational and technical support to the transportation department. Under general supervision, this position ensures the bus garage remains safe, clean, and organized, while assisting with basic vehicle maintenance.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Preventative Maintenance Support: Assist with basic fluid checks and top-offs (oil, coolant, windshield washer fluid, DEF). Perform routine light bulb replacements, wiper blade swaps, and tire pressure adjustments.
  • Fleet Cleanliness & Detail: Clean, wash, and detail the exterior and interior of school buses and support vehicles. Perform routine interior inspections to ensure passenger areas are sanitized and any upholstery damage or graffiti is immediately documented and addressed.
  • Shop Safety & Logistics: Maintain a clean, hazard-free shop environment. Sweep floors, empty trash, clean oil spills immediately, and organize tool rooms.
  • Inventory & Parts Running: Receive parts deliveries, log items into inventory, organize the parts room, and occasionally drive a division vehicle to pick up parts from local suppliers.
  • Shuttling Vehicles: Move buses safely throughout the division, into shop bays, or to local shops.
  • Documentation: Accurately log completed maintenance tasks, fluid usage, and report any discovered vehicle defects to the supervisor.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Basic familiarity with automotive tools, shop equipment, or general mechanical aptitude is highly preferred, but training will be provided.
  • License Requirements:
    • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (Required).
    • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with School Bus and Passenger endorsements
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand for long periods, crawl under vehicles, and work in varying weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
  • Clearances: Must pass standard school division background checks, fingerprinting, and pre-employment drug screening.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to understand and strictly follow verbal and written safety instructions (OSHA compliance).
  • A strong work ethic and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Basic computer skills for logging daily work orders or parts inventory.

Special Requirements:

Requires the ability to overhaul, restore, renovate, construct, and/or rebuild equipment, machinery, or objects, requiring adherence to prescribed standards and specifications.

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or GED certificate.

Physical Requirements:

Tasks involve the ability to exert very heavy physical effort in very heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (up to 100 pounds) and occasionally heavier items (100 pounds or over).
