Responsibilities

  • Assist with the safe supervision of students while riding district transportation.
  • Support students as they enter and exit the bus, including providing additional assistance when needed.
  • Help students safely transition between the bus and designated school or drop-off locations.
  • Assist students with seating, seat belts, safety restraints, or other transportation-related supports as assigned.
  • Monitor student behavior and reinforce appropriate bus expectations and safety procedures.
  • Provide individualized support to students based on their needs and established plans or directions from district staff.
  • Support students with communication, behavioral, mobility, or other needs while being transported.
  • Work collaboratively with the bus driver to maintain a safe and orderly environment.
  • Communicate student concerns or incidents to appropriate transportation and school personnel.
  • Follow district procedures related to student safety, confidentiality, emergencies, and transportation.
  • Participate in required training and professional development.
  • Perform other duties related to student transportation and support as assigned.

Portland Public Schools: Bus Paraprofessional

Portland Public Schools is seeking a caring, dependable, and student-focused individual to serve as a Bus Paraprofessional. This position assists and supports students while riding district transportation, helping ensure a safe, positive, and supportive environment for students traveling to and from school.

The Bus Paraprofessional works closely with the bus driver, transportation staff and school personnel to support students who may require additional supervision or assistance while being transported. The ideal candidate is patient, attentive, dependable, and able to build positive relationships with students.

Eligible candidates must meet the following qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to pass all required background checks.
  • Experience working with children or students preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with students with a variety of needs and abilities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm, patient, and professional in challenging situations.

  • Calendar: As per District Calendar
  • Compensation: In accordance with PESPA contract: plus retirement and paid time off
