Job summary

City of Evansville, via METS Mobility, is seeking a bus driver to transport passengers on fixed routes and mobility services. The role involves safe operation of transit vehicles, daily inspections, fare collection, and timely pickups and drop-offs.

Job description

Job Summary
Incumbent serves as bus driver for Metropolitan Evansville Transit System. Duties include passenger transportation on fixed route and Mobility as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Operates Mobility vans under the supervision of Mobility Project Manager and/or Dispatchers.
  • Conduct daily pre-trip inspections.
  • Collects fares and complete necessary financial reports.
  • Complete assigned pick-ups and drop-offs in a safe and timely manner.
  • Performs assigned duties of operation of METS vehicles.
  • Check amount of transfers and schedules.
  • Drive buses to downtown departure point at appropriate time; operate bus along assigned route picking up and letting off passengers.
  • Assist passengers in fare collection, provide information and disperse transfers.
  • Return bus downtown on time and (if midday) turn bus over to relief driver; or return bus to the garage at the end of the day.
  • Advise relief driver or mechanics of any unusual situations.
  • Complete daily time slip.
  • Train new employees as necessary.
  • Serve on report at garage office or Mobility office taking calls for information or relieve another driver as needed.
  • Performs assigned route independently. Recommends or requests deviations from assigned route when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills, Abilities and Knowledge
  • Adequate verbal and written communication skills to inform passengers and fill out necessary reports.
  • Adequate mathematical abilities to account for all fares collected.
  • Familiarity with general city geography, city streets, addresses and ability to read maps of the city.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity is necessary to steer and operate standard bus controls.
  • Must possess sufficient physical strength to properly assist wheelchairs and disabled individuals (lifting or pulling minimum of 40 pounds).
  • Clear driving record for past two (2) years.
  • Must maintain good working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and the public.
  • Must demonstrate genuine feeling of compassion for the elderly and disabled.
  • Ability to keep simple records.
  • Ability to read, understand and maintain time points and schedules.
  • Ability to work with a minimum level of supervision.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergencies.
  • Ability to write in a clear and legible manner.
  • Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
  • This position often requires working on weekend and holidays during a variety of shifts.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with air brake and public passenger endorsements.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements
  • Drivers perform repetitive body movements to operate controls, coordinating hand and foot movements to operate the bus, two-way radio and public address system and enter passenger and fare data into an electronic fare box.
  • Drivers will be required to remain alert constantly, watching and listening to traffic, pedestrians and passengers.
  • Drivers may be required to lift or pull up to 40 pounds and sit for extended periods with limited ability to move about.
  • Drivers operate transit vehicles in heavy traffic and in emergency or hazardous situations or conditions.
  • Mobility duties will include operation of Mobility vehicles and assisting passengers in a variety of settings and weather conditions.
  • Exerts physical effort involving assisting passengers to and from the van and handling wheelchair passengers in unusual circumstances.
  • Drivers will work independently with a minimum of breaks.
  • Work is usually performed inside; some exposure to various weather conditions is possible.
  • Bus duties are normally performed in a seated position; however, there is pronounced vibration from the engine and roadways.
