Responsibilities

  • Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles.
  • Perform mechanical repairs in a timely manner.
  • Perform welding and minor bodywork.
  • Service vehicles according to preventive maintenance schedule (rotate/balance tires, change oil/filters, lubricate parts, inspect/replace hoses/belts, maintain fluids).
  • Maintain accurate records of preventive maintenance and service.
  • Inspect vehicles and evaluate system conditions; service as needed and keep records.
  • Demonstrate preventive maintenance and inspections to helpers.
  • Operate shop equipment safely and follow procedures.
  • Maintain a safe work area and ensure tools/equipment are in good condition.
  • Keep time and materials records for repairs and servicing.
  • Operate buses and other vehicles as needed for maintenance.
  • Work irregular hours; comply with laws and policies.

Job description

Position: Bus Mechanic

Location: Texarkana, TX

Hours: M-F 6am - 4pm

Pay: $22/hour

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or GED

Valid Texas commercial driver’s license (Class B) with P&S endorsement

Bus Driver training (may be completed after employment)

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs with general supervision

Ability to operate equipment and tools involved in vehicle repair

Ability to move & position/reposition heavy equipment and vehicle parts

Ability to pass alcohol and drug test

Ability to pass required bus driver safety training

Acceptable driving record

Ability to operate bus

Experience:

Five years experience as mechanic

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  1. Use diagnostic equipment to evaluate mechanical problems in vehicles.
  2. Perform mechanical repairs in a timely manner.
  3. Perform welding and minor bodywork.
  4. Service vehicles according to established preventive maintenance schedule to include: rotate and balance tires; change oil and filters; lubricate vehicle parts; inspect and replace hoses, belts, mirrors, lamps; and maintain all fluid levels.
  5. Maintain accurate, updated records of preventive maintenance.
  6. Inspect vehicles and evaluate condition of systems, equipment, accessories, and lights; service as needed and maintain service records.
  7. Demonstrate process of preventive maintenance and visual inspections to mechanic helpers.
  8. Perform preventive maintenance; including bleeding of air tanks, on shop equipment according to established schedules.
  9. Operate tools, equipment, and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  10. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties.
  11. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.
  12. Help keep shop, equipment, and tools in safe operating condition.
  13. Maintain accurate records of time and materials required to perform repairs and service.
  14. Operate buses and other vehicles as needed for maintenance.
  15. Work irregular hours as needed.
  16. Comply with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and the local board policy.
  17. Maintain a clean and orderly shop area and fuel island; keep area free of tools and debris
