DESCRIPTION
Operational requirements for the East Chicago Public Transit necessitate that the person perform the below:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Bus Operation:
- Drives bus on designated routes,
- Picks up and drops off passengers at designated bus stops,
- Closely adheres to published time schedules,
- Complies with all traffic regulations,
- Reports any mechanical problems with a bus while en route to the supervisor or main office.
- Public Service:
- Interacts with members of the public in a polite, courteous, considerate, and helpful manner,
- Provides answers to questions from the public or directs them to someone who can respond,
- Turns in articles left on the bus by passengers to the main office.
- Bus Inspection:
- Performs daily pre-trip / post-trip inspection of the bus,
- Reports any damage or mechanical problems discovered to the supervisor.
- Safety:
- Performs all tasks in a safe manner,
- Monitors the environment on the bus and adjacent to the bus to ensure passenger safety,
- Identifies and corrects or reports safety hazards when they occur,
- Reports accidents immediately to a supervisor,
- Complies with all department, city, and INDOT safety policies, rules, and regulations,
- Reports any “off-duty” moving violations to the department immediately.
- Record-Keeping:
- Completes required FTA paperwork,
- Completes required INDOT paperwork.
- Teamwork:
- Works effectively with other members of the Transit Department to ensure efficient operations,
- Works effectively with personnel from other departments/divisions within the city government.

Required Knowledge
- Bus Operations, Equipment, Control, and Instrument Panels.
- Safety Hazards Involved in Bus Operations.
- East Chicago Streets and Locations.
- Published Transit Routes and Schedules.
- Transit Department Policies, Rules, Regulations, Operations, and Processes.
Required Skills
- Operation of Bus.
- Operation of Transit Department Radio System.
- Completion of FTA Paperwork.
- Completion of INDOT Paperwork.
- Customer Service.
Required Abilities
- Reading at the 10th Grade Level.
- Verbal Communication to be Understood by Others.
- Written Communication to be Understood by Others.
- Understand and Follow Verbal Instructions from the Supervisor.
- Understand and Follow Written Instructions from the Supervisor.
- Problem-Solving.
- Work Effectively in a Team Setting.
- Manual Dexterity to Use Equipment.
- Eye-Hand Coordination to Use Equipment.
- Stand Occasionally.

- Walk Occasionally.
Required Personal Characteristics
- Normal Range Depth Perception.
Required Licenses/Certifications
- CDL with a Class A or B Certification, Passenger Endorsement, and No Restrictions.
- Operate buses with air brakes.
EDUCATION
High School Diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of two (2) years of professional driving experience
- Good driving record, no major accidents in the past three (3) years
- Good knowledge of the geographical layout of the City of East Chicago
