Job summary

City of Dearborn Career Opportunities seeks a Building Plans Examiner to review building plans for compliance with state and local codes. You will guide staff in interpreting codes, review plans and specifications, and coordinate plan reviews with other departments.

The role requires a Bachelor’s in Construction Management or related field with 2 years of related experience, or an Associate’s degree with 3 years of related experience, plus Act 407 Registration and a Michigan driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or related field with 2 years of related experience, or an Associate’s degree with 3 years of related experience.
  • Act 407 Registration and valid State of Michigan driver’s license.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews building plans and specifications for compliance with public health, safety, and other building codes and ordinances; coordinates meetings with individuals to recommend building plan changes.
  • Coordinates building plan review with related departments to ensure timely completion of building projects.
  • Prepares reports outlining building plan review findings and recommendations; maintains plan review records for accuracy.
  • Responds to inquiries from customers and staff: interpreting building codes; assisting customers with applications for building permits; other related tasks.
  • Oversees Building Board of Appeals agenda and related activities.

BUILDING PLANS EXAMINERSALARY: Minimum: $77,040 per year Maximum: $102,939 per year**Position will typically hire at minimum pay and follow a step progression to maximum**JOB DESCRIPTION:This position is responsible for reviewing various building plans to ensure compliance with codes and ordinances. Responsibilities may include guiding staff in interpreting building codes; reviewing plans and specifications; and coordinating plan review with other departments.TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (See next page for complete job description)Reviews various building plans and specifications for compliance with public health, safety, and other building codes and ordinances; coordinates meetings with individuals to recommend building plan changes to maintain compliance with codes and ordinances.Coordinates building plan review with related departments to ensure timely completion of building projects.Prepares reports outlining building plan review findings and recommendations; maintains plan review records to ensure accuracy.Responds to various inquiries from customers and staff, including: assisting staff in interpreting building codes; assisting customers in preparing applications for building permits; and performing related tasks.Oversees Building Board of Appeals agendaDemonstrates regular and predictable attendance, including attendance at required meetings.This job description is intended to represent only the key areas of responsibilities; specific position assignments will vary depending on the business needs of the department.EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management or related field and 2 years of related experience; or, Associate’s degree and 3 years of related experience; or, all required certification(s) and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.LICENSING REQUIREMENTS:Act 407 RegistrationValid State of Michigan driver’s licensePARTS AND WEIGHTS OF THE EXAMINATION:Oral Interview 100%DURATION OF LIST:This list will be in effect for a period of six months.POST-EMPLOYMENT OFFER REQUIREMENTS:Satisfactory completion of criminal background check (including sex offender registry if applicable) and drug screen that tests for illegal drugs as defined by the Federal Drug Free Workplace Act but not those legalized under Michigan law.All appointees are subject to a one-year probationary period.
