Job summary

City of Lubbock is seeking a seasoned Building Official to plan, direct, and supervise the citys building inspection activities, ensuring code compliance and public safety.

You will develop policies, manage staff, oversee budgets, and coordinate with city officials, builders, and residents while upholding state and local codes.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, public administration or related field with 5–7 years in building construction or inspection, including management experience.
  • International Code Council Certified Building Official
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Knowledge of local/state codes and ordinances; enforcement procedures; building construction methods and practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret codes and ordinances; prepare reports; read and interpret construction plans; supervise; communicate effectively.

Job description

Plans, directs, and supervises the City's building inspection activities.

  • Develop and establish policies insuring the efficient operation of the City's building inspection activities;
  • Select, train, and supervise personnel directly or through subordinate supervisors, establish performance standards, evaluate the performance of
    subordinate staff, establish work priorities, goals, objectives, and schedules;
  • Develop and administer public relations effort to inform citizens or internal staff of services provided, promote effective citizens and staff relations;
  • Recommend revisions of building electrical, mechanical, and plumbing codes;
  • Prepare and administer operating budget;
  • Perform related duties as directed.

Completion of a bachelor degree in engineering, architecture, public administration or a related field with an additional five to seven years of experience in building construction or inspection, including management experience; or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:

International Code Council Certified Building Official

Valid Current Driver's License

Knowledge of:
  • Pertinent local and state codes and ordinances;
  • Enforcement procedures;
  • Building construction methods and practices.
Ability to:
  • Read and interpret codes and ordinances;
  • Prepare reports;
  • Read and interpret building construction plans and specifications;
  • Supervise the work of others;
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with other City officials, builders, and the public;
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Physical Requirements:
  • Occasionally stand and walk during the shift.
  • Occasionally climb ladders, stairs, and other inclined surfaces.
  • Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally bend and kneel.
  • Occasionally flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially at the knees.
  • Occasionally rotate upper trunk to the left or right while sitting or standing.
  • Place arms above, at, and below shoulder height.
  • Coordinate eye, hand, and foot movement in order to operate a vehicle.
