Job description

The purpose of this classification is to perform technical duties in all trade areas to assist in the maintenance and upkeep of all City buildings and facilities.

Performs labor and technical duties in all trade areas to assist in the maintenance and upkeep of all City buildings and facilities; responds to work orders to discuss project work and time frame for completion.

Prepares daily work orders for completion of assigned projects; provides guidance and direction to assigned subordinates in completing tasks; maintains standards through the effective coordination of activities; acts on employee problems; provides recommendations regarding routine personnel issues; oversees the work activities of assigned inmates and/or custodial labor.

Completes installation, repair and maintenance tasks on HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems, assists with carpentry work and roof repairs, and performs related tasks as assigned; troubleshoots and determines diagnosis for operational problems.

Prepares estimates for jobs for materials and/or supplies; ensures materials and supplies meet required standards.

Participates in various phases of construction and renovation projects.

Performs routine grounds work to maintain the exterior landscape of buildings; operates landscape equipment to trim, cut grass, and perform related landscape tasks.

Assists with various other tasks for the department and City; moves furniture; paints interior and exterior surfaces as needed; inspects and cleans parking areas.

Operates a city vehicle in performance of duties and a wide variety of tools and equipment to include power tools, compressors and pumps, forklifts, hand tools, volt ohmmeters, pick-up truck, bucket truck, lifts, and related tools.

Minimum Requirements:

High School diploma or GED, with vocational or technical school training in electrical, HVAC, plumbing and related trades; supplemented by three (3) years of experience as a general facility maintenance worker; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this job. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain throughout employment. Will be required to obtain a valid State of Louisiana Class D driver’s license within one month of hire.
