Cumberland Public Library is seeking aMaintenance Worker to perform cleaning and building maintenance, assist with security, and support daily operations. Tasks include routine cleaning, minor repairs, and coordinating with service vendors to keep facilities safe and welcoming.
The role requires physical stamina, independent work, and the ability to follow written and oral instructions. 35-hour weeks with varying shifts and some weekend duties.
This is varied and responsible manual work in the cleaning, repair, maintenance and security of public buildings.
An employee in this position is responsible for performing maintenance and repairs of plant operations and facilities, as well as assisting with library security, in order to maintain a clean, pleasant, comfortable and safe environment for library patrons and staff. Work requires the exercise of independent judgment in applying appropriate techniques, materials and procedures to the work.
This position includes physically demanding tasks, such as lifting and carrying boxes over 50 lbs. And shoveling snow; and it requires exposure to potentially harmful working conditions, such as in and around building machinery; climbing ladders and working on rooftops; and in routine use of cleaning agents, paints and solvents.
Work is performed under the general direction of the Facility Manager and with responsibility to the Library Director and Assistant Director/Technology Coordinator.

Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in cleaning and building maintenance.
Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the building trades.
Ability to maintain a schedule of cleaning and maintenance work.
Ability to perform maintenance and repair tasks without close supervision.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to communicate verbally and by email.
Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with other members of library staff, administration and outside vendors.
Ability to project a professional appearance appropriate to a business environment.
Sufficient physical stamina and general health to move loads, climb ladders and perform other tasks as noted above.
Ability to direct the work of others.
At least 2 years' experience in building maintenance work or in building trades, or vocational or technical degree relation to the above, or some combination of education and experience in the above-related fields.
The person in this role will be expected to work 35-hours a week spread of 5 days.
The schedule will be Monday-Thursday, 9:30AM-5:30PM and rotating Friday/Saturday, Fridays 9:30AM-5:30PM and Saturdays 7:00AM-3:00PM (Labor Day to 4th of July.) The person in this role will be required to work 2 Saturdays in the Summer (July and August,) 8:30AM-1:30PM. This person will be required to work at least 1 Sunday per month (October to May) paid at time-and-a-half the hourly rate.
The person in this role may be expected to occasionally change their schedule in order to help with coverage needs in the Maintenance Department.
Snow removal is paid at time-and-one-half the hourly rate no matter the time/day of the week.
The starting rate for this position is $21.75/hr with comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and the possibility of vestment in the state pension system. Hourly rate has very little negotiating space for the current fiscal year.
