Job summary

The Village of Tequesta is seeking a Full-time Building Inspector/Plans Examiner to perform on-site inspections of residential and commercial projects and to review plans for compliance with Florida Building Codes.

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, additional building technology training or degree, and licensure such as a Florida Inspector or Plan Examiner, with a preference for five years of related experience and a valid Florida driver’s license. Applications due 9/25/2026.

Responsibilities

• Performs on-site inspections of residential and commercial buildings, including remodeling work; inspects footings, foundations, framing, pools, and more.
• Enforces compliance with Florida Building Code across multiple disciplines.
• Performs technical plan reviews of building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
• Verifies proper permitting and licensure; ensures work is by licensed personnel with valid permits.
• Maintains records of inspection activity and plan review comments; prepares reports and enters data into the system.
• Provides customer service at the front counter and to other departments; assists with permits, records, and inquiries.
• Provides training to employees as assigned.
• Provides information and technical assistance to citizens and other employees.

The Village is currently accepting applications for a Full-time Building Inspector/Plans Examiner to carry out technical plan reviews and field inspection of new construction and remodeling projects at residential and non-residential properties, ensuring compliance with Florida Building Codes. Applicants must be currently employed by the Village of Tequesta. Applications Due 9/25/2026

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs on-site inspections of residential and commercial buildings, including remodeling/construction work, premises, and building systems; footings, foundations, framing, swimming pools, trusses, insulation, drywall, etc.; inspects construction methods and material.
• Enforces compliance with the Florida Building Code, pertaining to building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire prevention, life/safety, energy, handicapped accessibility codes, and other applicable federal, state and local codes, laws, rules, regulations, specifications, standards, policies and procedures.
• Performs technical plan review of building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems of residential and commercial buildings; reviews construction methods and material
• Verifies proper permitting of construction work and contractor licensure; determines if work is being performed by properly licensed individuals who possess valid permits
• Maintains records of building inspection activity and plans review comments; completes related reports, accesses and enters data in system
• Performs customer service functions for customers at front counter and other departments, including information and assistance related to permits, permit applications, inspections, records research, documentation, procedures, fees, or other issues and responds to routine questions, complaints, or requests for service
• Provides training to employees as assigned
• Provides information and technical assistance to citizens and provides technical expertise to other employees

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Education, Experience, Licensing & Certification

• High School Diploma or GED
• College degree; technical certificate; or technical instruction in building technology inspections or plan review
• Minimum five years of experience in construction, construction management, mechanical, electrical, plumbing or building construction preferred
• State of Florida Standard or a Provisional Inspector License
• State of Florida Standard or a Provisional Plan Examiner Licenseor the ability to obtain within two (2) years.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
• Must be a current Village of Tequesta employee

Necessary Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of the Florida Building Code, referenced Standards, and general construction
• Ability to interpret maps, plans, engineering drawings and architectural renderings
• Knowledge of Microsoft software with ability to enter inspection and plan review data
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with contractors, developers, owners, architects, engineers, supervisors, employees, elected officials

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Works in office environment with frequent need to work in outside weather conditionsThe employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
