Building Inspector III & Code Enforcement Officer

Join the Charter Township of Redford as a Building Inspector II & Code Enforcment Officer!

The Charter Township of Redford has one opening for Building Inspector & Code Enforcemnt Officer in the Building & Safety Department to conduct building and property inspections to ensure compliance with current building codes and local ordinances.

Rate of Pay: $28.44 to $35.13 hourly

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt/Full Time

Reports To: DPS Director or Designee

Partial paid benefits including health insurance, defined benefit pension, paid vacation, paid sick leave and 14 paid holidays.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Conduct building and property inspections to ensure compliance with current building codes and local ordinances.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Conducts building and ordinance inspections.
  • Coordinates and inspect sidewalk and rental programs.
  • Works with complainants, homeowners, and contractors to resolve issues.
  • Prepare reports regarding building inspections, complaints, and violations
  • Issues summonses and complaints as authorized.
  • Testifies in court providing information and documentation regarding alleged violations.
  • Provides information regarding violations or compliance requirements; gathers and maintains evidence as required to support any legal action required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:
  • High school diploma/GED.
  • Must be able to qualify and remained qualified under the rules promulgated by Michigan Act 54 of 1986. Such qualifications in part are: Four years of experience in general building construction as a contractor, skilled worker, a person responsibly in charge of construction, or a combination thereof. An architect or engineer who is licensed under the provisions of Act No. 299 of the Public Acts of 1980 may be deemed qualified.
  • Possess and maintain a valid driver license with five or fewer points.
  • May be exposed to potentially dangerous situations and circumstances while inspecting industrial areas, construction sites or conducting fire damage investigations.
  • May be required to work in all weather conditions.
  • May be required to climb ladders, or work in trenchers to perform necessary tasks above and below ground.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
  • Familiarity with building codes, building techniques and practices;
  • Familiarity with township codes, ordinances, policies and procedures;
  • Ability to interpret, explain, and apply federal, state, and local statutes, ordinances, and other requirements;
  • Familiarity with construction and other building codes;
  • Familiarity with computer operation using a variety of software;
  • Familiarity with public relations, community relations and community service goals and objectives;
  • Ability to communicate with complainants, property owners, and others;
  • Ability to utilize and apply various research sources, methods and techniques.

Examination: All candidates meeting minimum qualifications will be invited to take an oral examination.
