Job Description

A Building Inspector is responsible for the enforcement of, and determination of compliance with the State Construction Code and the City's Zoning Ordinance. In addition to the inspection of new construction and existing buildings, the employee may perform a variety of other inspections. Assignments and work methods are outlined in detail and performed under the general supervision of the Building Official and Deputy.

Certification Premium: Employees who possess the required inspector certification(s) receive an additional $5.00 per hour certification premium for all regular hours worked.

Essential Job Functions

A Building Inspector may be called upon to do any or all of the following: (Theses examples do not include all of the tasks which the employee may be expected to perform.)

  • Enforce the provision of the State Construction Code and the City's Zoning Ordinance, and other local ordinances related to building construction.
  • Review plans and specifications for new buildings and the remodeling of old buildings, and signs, before permits are issued.
  • Approve applications for building permits.
  • Make inspections as required by the State Construction Code such as foundation, rough framing, and final building.
  • Occasionally identify electrical wiring, plumbing, sewer, and water connection problems and refer to an appropriate inspector.
  • Answer inquiries and complaints regarding the work of the Inspection Department.
  • Check lot plans for conformity to the City Zoning Ordinance.
  • Prepare reports and keep records.
  • Perform other related work as assigned.

KSA

A Building Inspector, upon application, shall have the following training and experience:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Currently registered, or eligible to become registered as a "Building Inspector" and "Plan Reviewer", by the State of Michigan.
  • Licenses: A valid motor vehicle operator's license with a satisfactory driving record.

Qualifications For Employment

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods and materials used in building design and construction.
  • Thorough knowledge of the State Construction Code and the City's zoning requirements.
  • Some knowledge of commonly used computer software.
  • Ability to understand and interpret specifications.
  • Ability to detect structural and other faults in buildings.
  • Ability to read and understand construction documents.
  • Ability to maintain good working relations with building contractors, property owners, trades personnel, the public, and other employees.
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive and clear reports in connection with work assignments.
  • Ability to schedule work activities in an efficient and productive manner.
  • Ability to walk or stand for long periods of time on a daily basis, to work outside in inclement weather, to climb stairs in buildings inspected, to climb ladders and make on-site roofing inspections, to drive to and from inspection sites.
