What You’ll Do

  • Review & Approve: Examine building plans, permits, and applications for code compliance.
  • Inspect & Advise: Visit construction sites, examine structures, and ensure every detail meets safety and quality standards.
  • Investigate & Resolve: Respond to public concerns about hazardous, nuisance, or illegal conditions—and help find solutions.
  • Educate & Collaborate: Provide clear, helpful guidance to builders, homeowners, and city partners.
  • Document & Report: Keep thorough records of inspections, permits, and communications.
  • Champion Customer Service: Deliver friendly, effective service while upholding the highest standards.

What You Bring

  • High school diploma or GED, plus at least one year of building inspection or related trades experience.
  • Valid State of Iowa driver’s license.
  • ICC Combination Residential Inspector certification (or ability to obtain within 18 months).
  • Strong initiative, sound judgment, and a knack for problem-solving.
  • Great communication skills—both with colleagues and the public.
  • Comfort working outdoors, climbing ladders, and handling physical tasks in all weather.
  • Tech-savvy and organized, with a passion for continuous learning.
Qualifications for Building Inspector I:
  • Possess a valid State of Iowa Motor Vehicle operator's license. Graduation from high school or GED and one year of building inspection experience or equivalent experience in a building trade. Possession of certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Combination Residential Inspector or ability to obtain such within 18 months of hire.
Qualifications for Building Inspector II:
  • Possess a valid State of Iowa Motor Vehicle operator's license. Graduation from high school or GED and one year of building inspection experience or equivalent experience in a building trade. Possession of certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Combination Residential Inspector. Possession of certification by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Combination Commercial Inspector is required to be obtained within 18 months of hire.
