Building Inspector I:

$64,439 - $87,824

Building Inspector II:

$74,730 - $101,849

Effective July 2025, the salary for this position will increase by 2.0%.

Position Overview

The City of Rocklin is seeking a personable, technically skilled Building Inspector with a strong understanding of building codes and construction practices. The ideal candidate communicates clearly with contractors and the public, and is passionate about safety and quality in construction.

Essential Duties
  1. Performs field inspections of commercial, industrial, and residential properties for code conformance.
  2. Consults with legal, fire, and public works staff on building and safety codes.
  3. Performs plan checking for new construction, alterations, and remodeling projects.
  4. Reviews energy calculations for compliance with state codes.
  5. Reviews plans and issues permits, conducts final inspections, and issues occupancy certificates.
  6. Investigates complaints and assesses buildings post-incident for safety.
  7. Collaborates with legal and city staff on code compliance issues.
  8. Issues 'stop work' notices for unsafe or unpermitted work.
  9. Performs grading inspections emphasizing environmental protection.
  10. Engages with developers, engineers, architects, and contractors regarding code requirements.
  11. Prepares reports, notices, and correspondence.
  12. Participates in training to stay current with codes and laws.
  13. Represents the city in meetings with various organizations and the public.
  14. Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience

Combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Education may not fully substitute for experience unless specified.

Building Inspector I: High school diploma; plus two years of experience as a general contractor or in building trades with public contact.

Building Inspector II: High school diploma; plus two years of experience in building inspection or code enforcement at a public agency.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid California Class C Driver License and good driving record.
  • Certification as a California Residential Building or Combination Inspector by ICC required within 12 months for Inspector I, upon appointment for Inspector II.

  • Applicants will be screened for minimum and desired qualifications.
  • Pass a LiveScan background check prior to appointment.
  • Pre-employment medical screening may be required.
