To perform rule-specific inspection activities, review of plans and inspections of new building projects, alterations, and repairs, enforce various codes, ordinances, and standards to ensure compliance, and perform other related duties. Depending on qualifications, incumbents may be assigned to any one or a combination of inspection disciplines including building, plumbing/mechanical, electrical, roofing, residential, multi-family, structural plan review, non-structural plan review, project management, and enforcement case management.
The levels are distinguished by the number of disciplines an inspector is qualified in, based on certification and abilities. Positions are flexibly staffed, advancing upon meeting experience and certification requirements. Building Inspector I is entry-level; II involves complex duties in two disciplines; III involves three disciplines. The IV level involves four disciplines.
Knowledge of construction methods, inspection techniques, safety regulations, and applicable codes; ability to read and interpret plans, establish effective relationships, operate a vehicle and computer, lift up to 50 pounds, and work in various conditions. Education typically requires a high school diploma, with experience in building inspection or construction, or college coursework and certification. A valid California driver’s license and specific certifications are required, with ongoing certification maintenance.
Probation period of 12 months, with certification in relevant disciplines within one year. Additional knowledge, abilities, and experience are required for specialized inspection disciplines, including roofing, residential, multi-family, and commercial inspections, with specific certification and experience prerequisites.
