Job description

DEFINITION

This work is professional in nature and is responsible for assisting with the monitoring the discharge of fats, oils and grease (FOG) in the City’s sanitary sewer system. This position will inspect Food Service Establishments and other commercial facilities that are subject to applicable City code requirements for grease source control compliance. Work is performed independently, but is reviewed by a supervisor.

Work involves inspecting grease traps at restaurants, hotels, bars, fast food businesses and other applicable businesses to ensure no grease is making its way into the sewer lines; documenting inspections; performing follow-up inspections for the ones that fail; entering reports into the computer; record keeping, and any other duty assigned to support the program and pretreatment program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Public Works Maintenance Worker I

Knowledge of:

  1. Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in maintenance work.
  2. Basic construction and repair methods.
  3. Principles and practices of work safety.

Ability to:

  1. On a continuous basis, know and understand operations, and observe safety rules.
  2. Intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember equipment location; explain jobs to others.
  3. Perform semi-skilled maintenance work.
  4. Learn to operate a variety of light and heavy mechanical equipment.
  5. Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  6. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Experience and Training:

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:

Some general maintenance experience.

Training:

Formal or informal education or training to ensure the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful performance.

License or Certificate:

Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate California driver's license.

May need to possess a valid California Class A or B driver's license as required by the position.

PHYSICAL/SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

Intermittently, sit while studying or preparing reports; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing maintenance or installation of equipment and parts; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; lift or carry weight of 100 pounds or less.
