Building Inspector
Position Summary
Plans, organizes, and administers a comprehensive planning and zoning program to provide current and long-range planning services.
Essential Functions
- Inspects new and existing industrial, commercial, and residential properties, and other building and construction for conformance to codes, regulations, plans, specifications, and standards.
- Provides information and confers with developers, engineers, architects, property owners, and others regarding code requirements, city policies, and procedures; resolves complaints and problems.
- Investigates complaints of existing buildings to determine usage and identify hazardous or life safety conditions.
- Reviews plans and specifications during inspections for buildings and related construction, including installation, remodeling, replacement, and repair.
- Documents and maintains accurate records of inspections, actions, and regulatory efforts; prepares reports, correspondence, and issues notices for code violations.
- Collects and maintains evidence regarding non-compliance for court use; testifies in court as needed.
- Develops and updates knowledge of construction technology, methods, materials, and codes through training.
- Contributes to team efficiency by offering suggestions and actively participating in team activities.
- Organizes work, sets priorities, and meets deadlines, ensuring team compliance.
- Interacts courteously with the public and staff, promoting a harmonious work environment.
Qualifications
- Two years of college coursework in construction inspection, technology, pre-engineering, or related field, or completion of a recognized apprenticeship; plus two years of journey-level experience as a building inspector at a public entity, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Illinois driver’s license.
- ICC Certification as a 1 & 2 Family Dwelling Inspector and ICC Building Inspector Certification.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, climb ladders, and perform inspection duties.
- Visual and auditory capacity to perform inspections and communicate effectively.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of building codes, practices, and regulations.
- Understanding of construction materials and terminology.
- Proficiency in computer applications and record-keeping.
- Ability to interpret plans and specifications.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
- Skill in enforcing laws and regulations tactfully and impartially.
- Ability to establish effective working relationships.
Salary & Benefits
Salary: $36.13 - $50.59/hour, DOQ. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, life insurance, tuition reimbursement, paid time off, and participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF).
