Job description

The Building Inspector performs plan reviews and building inspections to ensure buildings and structures located with the City of Fridley are in compliance with all applicable ordinances, laws, and policies.

Expected hiring range: $35.98 - $38.39

  1. Performs building inspection activities and plan reviews including structural, mechanical, plumbing and related inspections ensuring compliance with the state building code, federal and state laws, and municipal ordinances.

a.Reviews construction plans and confers with owners, developers, designers and contractors during planning stages of design and construction.

b.Performs physical inspections of buildings.

c.Issues citations for code violations and stop work orders and follow-up resolutions.

  1. Coordinates the building permit application process.
  2. Participates in Development Review Committee meetings.
  3. Prepares and recommends revisions to ordinances regarding building inspection activities.
  4. Participates in administration of platting ordinances, zoning enforcement, and municipal licensing laws.
  5. Provides positive customer service and responds to requests for information and service from the public, staff, outside agencies, businesses, realters, etc.
  6. Attends meetings and trainings and maintains certifications.
  7. Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High School diploma or equivalent.
  2. Associate’s/Technical Degree in building construction, building inspection technology, structural engineering or related field; and
  3. Two years’ relevant work experience; OR
  4. Equivalent combination of education/training/experience.
  5. Valid Minnesota Driver’s License.
  6. Ability to obtain Minnesota Certified Building Code Official state license within one year of hire.

Desired Qualifications:

  1. Experience in municipal building inspection.
  1. Knowledge of State building, planning and housing codes and the ability to interpret those codes.
  2. Knowledge of municipal zoning and land use ordinances.
  3. Knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, techniques, materials and tools used in building construction.
  4. Skill in reading and interpreting blueprints, plans and diagramsand using computer programs.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  6. Ability to deal tactfully and positively with the general public, owners with code violations, elected officials, businesses, outside agencies, and City staff.
  7. Ability to work independently and prioritize work.
  8. Ability to work collaboratively, cooperatively, and positively in a team environment.
  9. Ability to work under limited supervision with general autonomy in determining how objectives are achieved.
  10. Ability to apply a variety of procedures, policies and precedents using moderate analytical ability.
