Job summary

Mendocino Railway is hiring Building & Grounds Maintenance and Janitorial team members to maintain clean, safe, functional, and welcoming facilities across our railroad operations. This is a part-time position with the flexibility to work nights, weekends and holidays.

The role includes janitorial duties, groundskeeping, and basic building maintenance at stations, offices, shops, and other properties, with responsibilities ranging from cleaning trains and depots to minor repairs and event setup.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; must be 18+.
  • Pre-employment drug screen and criminal background check.
  • Valid and current driver’s license.
  • 1+ years of related experience.
  • Skilled with basic hand tools and power tools.
  • Skilled at building and assembling materials.
  • Painting and woodworking skills preferred.
  • Good customer service and communication skills.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Reliable, punctual, and professional in appearance.
  • Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Willingness to work on trains and at stations/events.

Responsibilities

  • General janitorial duties at depot, depot grounds, and on board trains including cleaning and sanitizing facilities and equipment, trash removal, and washing of railcars and locomotives.
  • Perform landscaping and outdoor upkeep around all properties and guest areas to ensure safe and clear walking spaces.
  • Conduct minor maintenance and repairs at the depot, on depot grounds and on board the trains including painting, replacing fixtures, and assisting with general maintenance projects.
  • Safely use and apply janitorial and other related cleaning supplies.
  • Safely use small hand tools and powered equipment.
  • Ensure proper application and use of PPE.
  • Responsible for fueling and cleaning railroad vehicles prior to events.
  • Assist with set-up and take-down of equipment and supplies needed for special events as well as holiday themed decorations.
  • Maintain a clean and organized workspace and assist with assigned side work.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Job description

Mendocino Railway is the owner/operator of freight and passenger railroads including the California Western Railroad / Skunk Train and the River Fox Train. The world-famous Skunk Train is a standard gage passenger railroad that was founded in 1885, and operates 40 miles between Fort Bragg and Willits, in Mendocino County, California.

We are hiring Building & Grounds Maintenance and Janitorial team members to maintain clean, safe, functional, and welcoming facilities across our railroad operations. This hands-on position performs routine janitorial duties, groundskeeping, and basic building maintenance and repairs at stations, offices, shops, and other company properties. This is a part-time position with the flexibility to work nights, weekends and holidays.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including but not limited to)
  • General janitorial duties at the depot, depot grounds, and on board the trains including cleaning and sanitizing facilities and equipment, trash removal, and washing of railcars and locomotives.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or equivalent; Must be 18 years of age or older.

  • Valid and current driver’s license.
  • 1+ years of related experience.
  • Skilled at use of basic hand and power tools.
  • Skilled at building and assembling materials.
  • Painting and woodworking skills preferred.
  • Good customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
  • Must be reliable, punctual, and professional in appearance and demeanor.
  • Must be available to work weekends, evenings, and holidays.
  • Willingness to work both onboard a moving train and at a station or event locations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. safely.
  • Ability to bend, reach, push, pull, and perform repetitive tasks.
  • Comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor environments and around moving rail equipment (with provided safety training).
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and walk on uneven surfaces (train platforms, gravel, etc.).

  • Employment is part-time and includes paid sick leave accrual and 401(k) plan.
  • If employment moves to full-time status it would include medical, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) retirement, paid holidays, paid sick leave, and paid time off.
