Qualifications

  • Refrigeration certification (Q01) is required.

  • FDNY Certificate of Fitness (Sprinkler S-12 and Standpipe S-13) preferred.
  • OSHA 10-Hour certification is preferred.
  • DMV driver's license.
  • Experience with package unit systems.

Responsibilities

  • Operate, maintain, repair, and install HVAC systems and equipment.
  • Perform routine inspection of HVAC and fire systems.
  • Ensure compliance with City, County and State codes.
  • Manage daily reporting, logbooks, and assignments.
  • Prepare operational procedures with Chief Engineer for code compliance.
  • Conduct facility walkthroughs for inspections, data gathering, and audits.
  • Oversee work orders through workflow applications.
  • Ensure safety procedures and regulations are followed and monitor contractor performance.
  • Keep up with new technologies and efficiency protocols in building operations.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Job Title: Building Engineer (HVAC)

Location: Brooklyn Navy Yard, Brooklyn, NY 11205

Salary: $50.00 - $55.00 per hour

Employment Status: Full time, Non-Exempt

Department: Property Management

Reports To: Assistant Chief Engineer

Schedule: Saturday to Wednesday 7AM - 4PM

Summary

The Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC) is a not‑for‑profit corporation that serves as the real estate developer and property manager of the Yard on behalf of its owner, the City of New York. BNYDC strives to provide an environment where businesses and careers can grow.

Areas of Responsibility
  • Operate, maintain, repair, and install HVAC systems and associated equipment.
  • Perform routine inspection of all HVAC and fire systems.
  • Maintain compliance with City, County and State ordinances and codes.
  • Handle daily reporting, logbooks, and assignments.
  • In coordination with Chief Engineer, prepare operational procedures to ensure code compliance of Mechanical Systems, FDNY Logs, and annual maintenance inspections.
  • Perform facility walkthroughs for inspections, data gathering, photography, and audits.
  • Manage work orders through workflow applications.
  • Ensure operations comply with safety procedures, client safety requirements, company policy and procedures, and applicable regulations and industry standards.
  • Monitor contractor performance to ensure work is completed according to specifications and within the facilities rules and regulations.
  • Keep abreast of new technologies and efficiency protocols for building operations.
  • Perform related work and other duties as assigned.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • Strong project management, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to multi‑task effectively and manage multiple deadlines.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Excel and Word).
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with tenants, contractors, sub‑contractors, clients, and employees.
  • Ability to look for new ways to improve internal processes and workflow.
  • Proficient with BMS systems.
  • Obtain additional FDNY Certificate of Fitness as required.
  • Ability to read blueprints.
  • Availability to work overtime and respond to emergency situations as needed.
  • Ability to lift/move heavy equipment (up to 50 pounds), climb ladders, work in confined spaces and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Qualifications
  • HS Diploma/GED.
  • Certification of Refrigeration required for Engineer position (Q01 Certification).
  • EPA Universal Technician Certification.
  • DMV issued driver’s license.OSHA 10‑Hour.
  • Sprinkler S‑12 Certificate of Fitness (FDNY).
  • Standpipe S‑13 Certificate of Fitness (FDNY).
  • Package Unit experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • OSHA 30‑hour or OSHA 511 Course.
  • F89 Certified (FLSD) Fire Safety Director (must be able to obtain within first 6 months of employment).
  • Category 7G Cooling Tower Water Treatment License (DEC).
