Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots and repairs heating, ventilation, and automation systems.
  • Prevents and performs maintenance on heat control systems.
  • Makes changes on the BAS for heating and lighting controls.
  • Replaces or adds equipment to improve heat controls.
  • Maintains knowledge of BAS related to HVAC and lighting.
  • Reads and edits basic PPCL control language.
  • Works at heights over 20 feet when required.
  • Interprets plans and specifications for maintenance work.
  • Writes reports and maintains records.
  • Orders material for assigned jobs.

Salary: M-8, $34.04 to $39.13 per hour, DOE
The wage above reflects a 115% differential for market rate.
Job Summary
The Building Controls Specialist is responsible for the maintenance of automated building control systems within Anchorage School District facilities. The position reports to the department lead and location of the work station is subject to contract language concerning shift location/bids. Maintenance employees work a 4/10 schedule with weekends and holidays off. The Anchorage School District offers paid leave and a very competitive benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, HSA, FSA and life insurance. This position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).


Job Requirements
The following are required:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.
  • A minimum of three years of experience within the past five years in the field of heating and ventilation control, with emphasis in electronics. Work experience must show evidence of ability to perform tasks assigned.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic practical application.
  • Possession of an Alaska third class boiler operator's license.


Essential Job Functions

  • Troubleshoots and repairs heating, ventilation, and automation systems.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on heat control systems.
  • Makes required changes on the computer Building Automation System (BAS) for heating and lighting controls.
  • Replaces or adds new equipment for proper or improved heat controls.
  • Maintains working knowledge of the building automation system control as it pertains to HVAC and lighting.
  • Reads, troubleshoots, and edits basic PPCL control language.
  • Routinely works at heights over 20 feet.
  • Interprets and works from plans, prints, specifications, and established maintenance procedures.
  • Writes reports as required.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with others.
  • Makes use of appropriate computer applications for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Orders required material for assigned jobs.
  • Works cooperatively with others within established maintenance and safety procedures.


Physical /Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
