Job summary

Anchorage School District seeks a Data Communications Specialist to assist in installing and maintaining local and wide area networks across ASD schools and departments. The role focuses on LAN/WAN cabling and networking equipment, with troubleshooting and documentation responsibilities.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.
  • Minimum of two years of experience installing and maintaining data communication equipment and cabling.
  • Must have a valid Alaska driver's license and use of personal vehicle for work.
  • Technical training to the level of associate degree in electronics or related field.
  • Knowledge of federal and state electrical and fire codes; UTP/fiber certifications; and EIA/TIA standards.

Responsibilities

  • Operates and troubleshoots Windows and Apple operating systems and applications.
  • Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots LAN/WAN cabling infrastructure and electronics.
  • Works at heights over 20 feet as part of network installations.
  • Collaborates with maintenance data communications technician II on design and installation of networks.
  • Develops procedures for installing and operating networks and equipment.
  • Provides training and documents processes for peers and end users.

The Data Communications Specialist assists in the installation of local and wide area networks for Anchorage School District schools and departments. The specialist maintains the networks and troubleshoots issues. Maintenance employees work a Monday through Friday schedule with weekends and holidays off. The Anchorage School District offers paid leave and a very competitive benefits package which includes medical, dental, vision, HSA, FSA and life insurance. This position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS).

Job Requirements The following are required:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent, or current enrollment in a GED program.
  • Minimum of two years of experience in the installation and maintenance of high level data communication equipment and cabling.
  • Must have a valid Alaska driver's license and be prepared to use personal vehicle for work.
  • Technical training in electronics or similar field to the level of associate degree.
  • Knowledge of federal and state electrical and fire codes.
  • UTP cable and fiber terminating certifications.
  • Knowledge of EIA/TIA telecommunications building wiring standards.
  • Knowledge of installation, terminating and certification of UTP and fiber optic cable plant.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operates and troubleshoots problems with Windows and Apple operating systems and applications.
  • Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots problems with LAN/WAN cabling infrastructure and electronics.
  • Routinely works at heights over 20 feet.
  • Works both independently and under the supervision and direction of the maintenance data communication technician II assisting in the design and installation of local and wide area networks in schools and departments.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, and maintains local area network horizontal distribution components on all sites as required in accordance with standard procedures.
  • Develops procedures for installing, operating, and troubleshooting of all networks and associated equipment.
  • Works with vendors and end users in the installation and troubleshooting process.
  • Provides training for peers, subordinates, and end users in the correct usage of on-site and remote equipment.
  • Performs cable and fiber certification testing.
  • Writes reports and creates documentation.
  • Communicates clearly and professionally, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.

Physical /Mental Demands The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to understand vague and implicit instructions, be able to readily recall facts and details, handle conflict and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.
