Job description

Summary/Objective

The Controls Technician represents CMS Controls as the direct customer contact and is responsible for all service‑related control tasks. These tasks include spot/emergency service calls, preventive maintenance, and small repair projects. Controls technicians work closely with the dispatcher and team leader for daily assignments and weekly scheduling.

In this position, you will establish and maintain a positive relationship with customers, vendors, and coworkers, using effective oral and written communication skills via phone, computer, and face‑to‑face interactions. Job stress ranges from moderate to extreme.

Essential Functions
  • Perform controls system support and troubleshooting across various product lines (Distech, Siemens, Honeywell, Niagara, and Trane).
  • Conduct controls preventive maintenance.
  • Remotely support controls customers alongside mechanical service providers.
  • Safely perform emergency controls service visits to existing and new CMS Controls customers.
  • Complete all required electronic paperwork in a timely and accurate manner, including Exit Reports for start‑ups and preventive maintenance.
  • Communicate regularly with the controls team lead for daily/weekly assignments.
  • Utilize the controls team leader for assistance on quality control, process, and technical issues.
  • Perform accurate sales surveys to assist the controls projects team on bids and scope generation.
  • Maintain truck stock of general electrical equipment and tools for maximum efficiency.
  • Work overtime and overnight shifts as requested by controls management.
  • Participate in the on‑call technician rotation schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Support CMS Controls’ financial goals and principles.
  • Always conform with CMS Controls policies and procedures.
  • Enforce safety to the highest standards and maintain security and accountability of company‑issued and procured assets.
  • Conduct professional conduct at job sites and while driving company vehicles.
  • Maintain any necessary licenses or certifications applicable to the role.
  • Attend required department meetings.
  • Attend company or vendor training as required.
  • Work with and train CMS Controls helpers and apprentices assigned to your job team.
  • Complete and build on your Controls Technician Skill Set Tree (evaluation provided by your manager).

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

Controls technicians work primarily in commercial buildings, office buildings, schools, hospitals, government facilities, and factories. Work sites may be very hot or cold because of malfunctioning heating and cooling systems, and some system components are located outdoors. Working in cramped spaces and during irregular hours is common. Ability to climb ladders to access rooftop units is required.

Physical Demands

The position is moderately physical and requires regular use of PCs, walking, electrical tools, and networking equipment. Some work may be outdoors, in cramped or tight spaces, or involve working on a PC.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full‑time position, typically Monday‑through‑Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with frequent overtime and irregular hours.

Travel

Daily travel to CMS Controls locations in the greater Atlanta, GA area is required.

Requirements
Required Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 18 years old.
  • Ability to pass a pre‑employment drug screen and participate in a drug‑free workplace.
  • Clean driving record and current driver’s license.
  • Strong steady work history with a minimum of 3 years performing building controls service/installation.
  • Operating knowledge of Windows and PC functions, including navigating the Windows file system, installing software, and using a multimeter.
Preferred Education and Experience
  • Associate’s degree.
  • Experience with one or more of the following systems: Niagara, Distech, Honeywell, JCI, Siemens, Trane.
  • Familiarity with IT systems.
  • OSHA 30 certification.

  • Demonstrated history of working safely and following safe work practices.
  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with CMS Controls customers and coworkers, supporting the company culture.
