Job summary

Edison Smart® in Dallas, Texas seeks a Building Automation Systems (BAS) Design Engineer to design innovative HVAC control systems for commercial projects, ensuring compliance with customer requirements, codes, and project specs.

You will develop control architectures, layouts, and sequences, review drawings, select controllers and field devices, and provide documentation while supporting installation and commissioning with project teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 3+ years of experience designing Building Automation Systems (BAS) or HVAC control systems.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC equipment and control strategies, including AHUs, VAVs, chillers, boilers, pumps, cooling towers, central plants.
  • Experience reading and interpreting mechanical, electrical, and construction drawings.
  • Knowledge of BAS communication protocols (BACnet, Modbus, TCP/IP).
  • Experience developing control sequences and points lists.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or other design software.

Responsibilities

  • Design BAS for commercial, institutional, healthcare, industrial, and mission-critical facilities.
  • Develop control system architecture, network layouts, and controller selections.
  • Create control drawings, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and system documentation.
  • Design HVAC control sequences based on project specifications and owner requirements.
  • Review mechanical and electrical plans for proper BAS integration.
  • Select controllers, sensors, actuators, and field devices.
  • Prepare submittal packages, BOMs, and engineering documentation.
  • Support project managers and field teams during installation, commissioning, and startup.
  • Respond to RFIs and engineering changes throughout project execution.
  • Coordinate with consulting engineers, contractors, and customers for successful delivery.
  • Ensure designs comply with codes, standards, and quality requirements.

Job description

We are looking for a talented Building Automation Systems (BAS) Design Engineer to join our clients growing team in Dallas, Texas. In this role, you will be responsible for designing innovative building automation and HVAC control systems for commercial projects, ensuring solutions meet customer requirements, industry standards, and project specifications.


The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of HVAC systems, controls engineering, and building automation technologies, with the ability to collaborate effectively with project managers, field technicians, and customers throughout the project lifecycle.


Key Responsibilities


  • Design Building Automation Systems (BAS) for commercial, institutional, healthcare, industrial, and mission-critical facilities.

  • Develop control system architecture, network layouts, and controller selections.

  • Create control drawings, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and system documentation.

  • Design HVAC control sequences based on project specifications and owner requirements.

  • Review mechanical and electrical plans to ensure proper integration with BAS designs.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent industry experience).

  • 3+ years of experience designing Building Automation Systems (BAS) or HVAC control systems.

  • Strong understanding of HVAC equipment and control strategies, including:

  • Air Handling Units (AHUs), Variable Air Volume (VAV) Systems, Chillers, Boilers, Pumps, Cooling Towers, Central Plants

  • Experience reading and interpreting mechanical, electrical, and construction drawings.

  • Knowledge of BAS communication protocols, including BACnet, Modbus, and TCP/IP.

  • Experience developing control sequences and points lists.

  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or other design software.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
