Job summary

The University of Texas at Arlington is seeking a dedicated janitorial assistant to perform routine cleaning across university buildings, dormitories, and food service areas. The role emphasizes following established routines and maintaining high cleanliness standards.

Typical hours are Monday through Friday, 5:00 pm to 1:30 am, with a later start in August. Applicants should have a high school diploma or GED and at least six months of cleaning experience.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED and 6 months experience in cleaning buildings or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in cleaning university buildings preferred.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, apply cleaning chemicals, and replenish supplies.
  • Clean, dust, and disinfect restrooms, classrooms, locker rooms, common areas and other spaces.
  • Perform general custodial tasks: sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming; scrub tile floors; wax and polish; wash windows.
  • Collect and dispose of trash and recyclables.
  • Operate custodial equipment (vacuums, buffers, scrubbers, extractors).
  • Promote energy conservation by turning off lights.
  • Inspect buildings for cleanliness; report maintenance issues requiring work orders.
  • Perform other duties assigned.

Salary

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $15.77 to $15.77. The final offer will be commensurate with the candidate’s relevant experience and qualifications.

Purpose of Position

Performs routine manual work involving cleaning and housekeeping duties within university buildings, dormitories, and food service areas. Responsibilities include conducting janitorial and housekeeping tasks in alignment with established work routines and cleanliness standards.

Essential Functions
  • Clean and sanitize restrooms, apply appropriate cleaning chemicals, and replenish supplies.
  • Clean, dust, and disinfect areas including restrooms, classrooms, locker rooms, common areas, and other assigned spaces.
  • Perform general custodial tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and vacuuming; scrub tile, floors, stairways, hallways, shower and locker rooms, and lobbies; wax and polish floors, wash windows, and clean furniture and office equipment.
  • Collect and properly dispose of trash and recyclable materials.
  • Operate custodial equipment including vacuums, buffers/burnishers, scrubbers, commercial cleaning machines and extractors.
  • Promote energy conservation by ensuring lights are turned off in classrooms, offices, and other areas.
  • Inspect buildings for cleanliness and needed repairs; identify and report maintenance issues requiring work orders, such as light bulb replacement, lock adjustments, carpet repair, broken glass, ceiling tile replacement, and other hazards.
  • Perform other duties assigned.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and a minimum of six (6) months experience in cleaning buildings or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • One (1) year of experience performing cleaning and housekeeping duties in higher education or similar commercial settings.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to effectively execute oral and written instruction.
  • Ability to complete all physical tasks as needed, including moderately heavy physical labor and movement such as walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, standing, sitting, kneeling, and squatting.
  • Ability to accurately perform all phases of duties assigned.
  • Knowledge of cleaning and janitorial methods and materials.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use maintenance and janitorial tools, equipment, and supplies, including basic janitorial equipment such as buckets, mops, automatic floor scrubbers, floor buffers, shop vacuums, and upright vacuum cleaners.
Work Schedule
  • Monday through Friday; 5:00 pm to 1:30 am
  • Beginning on August 17, 2026: Monday through Friday 3:30 pm to 12:00 am
Working Conditions
  • May work in all weather conditions.
  • May work around chemicals.
  • Essential position; may be required to report during campus emergencies.
