Job summary

Banner Staffing Services-AZ in Mesa, Arizona, is seeking a Medical Interpreter to provide English/Spanish interpretation for patients and families with limited English proficiency. You’ll support patient/provider communication from registration to discharge, using medical terminology with accuracy and cultural sensitivity.

The role requires completion of a medical interpreter training program (preferred) and at least one year of interpreter experience.

Qualifications

  • Fluent English and target language interpretation skills, with medical terminology knowledge.
  • Completed associate degree or equivalent in communications/healthcare; bachelor’s preferred.
  • One year interpreting experience and a post-offer health assessment and background check required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide English/Spanish interpretation for LEP patients and families.
  • Act as neutral conduit between patients and healthcare staff to aid care.
  • Document interpretation services accurately and clearly.
  • Serve as cultural mediator to improve communication in medical care.
  • Coordinate with supervisors on unusual situations and facility needs.

This position acts as a neutral party in the role as a conduit of information between healthcare providers and patients and families.CORE FUNCTIONS1. Acts as a conduit of information for all clinical services including medical terminology and support services, policies and procedures to LEP patients.2. Interprets patient and/or family questions or concerns to appropriate healthcare staff to optimize the patient care experience.3. Documents accurately, completely and clearly all interpretation services.4. Serves as a cultural mediator, as necessary and when appropriate, to enhance communication between patients/family, as it relates to medical care.5. Acts as a neutral party in the role as a conduit of information between health care staff and patients and families. Confers with supervisor on any unusual situations. Positions are facility based with no budgetary responsibility. Internal customers: All levels of nursing management and staff, medical staff, volunteers and all other members of the interdisciplinary health care team. External Customers: family members.Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all customers of Banner Health with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating our core and leader behaviors each and every day.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSMust possess a level of knowledge typically acquired through the completion of an associate's degree in communications or health care related field or equivalent experience.Requires fluency in English and target language of interpretation and a proficiency level typically achieved with 1 year of experience as an interpreter. Requires an understanding of medical terminology. Effective 9/1/2019, all new hires or transfers into the role must pass a written and oral exam with a score of 75% or above.
