Job summary

Qualifications

  • Fluency in English and target language with ~1 year interpretation experience.
  • Understanding of medical terminology.
  • Pass written and oral exam with a score of 75% or above.
  • Effective communication, problem solving, time management and flexibility.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret for LEP patients and families across clinical services, including medical terminology and policies.
  • Convey questions or concerns to healthcare staff to optimize care.
  • Document interpretation services accurately and clearly.
  • Act as a cultural mediator to enhance communication between patients and staff.
  • Serve as a neutral conduit of information between health care staff and patients/families and escalate unusual situations when needed.

Banner University Medical Center is seeking a Spanish Medical Interpreter to join our team!

As a Medical Interpreter with Banner University Medical Center- Phoenix, you will be an important part of the healthcare team, providing English/Spanish interpretation services for patients/companions with limited English proficiency that we encounter throughout the hospital, including patient/provider communication. You will be involved during every aspect of the patient stay, from registration to discharge. Effective communications skills and knowledge of medical terminology is required.

Shifts
  • Part-time day shift: Thursdays 6:30am-3pm, Every other Friday 6:30am-3pm, Saturdays 6:30am-3pm

You will enjoy a flat rate $1/hour weekend shift differential as well as an 18% night shift differential where applicable!

Position Summary

This position provides interpretation for Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and their families. This position acts as a neutral party in the role as a conduit of information between healthcare providers and patients and families.

Core Functions
  • Acts as a conduit of information for all clinical services including medical terminology and support services, policies and procedures to LEP patients.
  • Interprets patient and/or family questions or concerns to appropriate healthcare staff to optimize the patient care experience.
  • Documents accurately, completely and clearly all interpretation services.
  • Serves as a cultural mediator, as necessary and when appropriate, to enhance communication between patients/family, as it relates to medical care.
  • Acts as a neutral party in the role as a conduit of information between health care staff and patients and families. Confers with supervisor on any unusual situations. Positions are facility based with no budgetary responsibility. Internal customers: All levels of nursing management and staff, medical staff, volunteers and all other members of the interdisciplinary health care team. External Customers: family members.
  • Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all customers of Banner Health with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating our core and leader behaviors each and every day.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must possess a level of knowledge typically acquired through the completion of an associate's degree in communications or health care related field or equivalent experience.
  • Requires fluency in English and target language of interpretation and a proficiency level typically achieved with 1 year of experience as an interpreter.
  • Requires an understanding of medical terminology.
  • Effective 9/1/2019, all new hires or transfers into the role must pass a written and oral exam with a score of 75% or above.
  • Must demonstrate effective communication skills, problem solving, strong human relations skills, organizational and time management skills and flexibility in responding to multiple demands.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications or health care related field.
  • Completion of a medical interpreter skills training course including learning the code of ethics and standards of practice.
  • Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
